Wow, where do I start.
I first became a Jeep owner in early 2013 when I ordered a JKUR and drove the heck out of it. I have some great memories of that Jeep when my kids were younger with trips to Sedona and other areas around Phoenix. I unfortunately had to sell it in late 2014 while going through a divorce.
I originally planned to order a new Jeep early last year but due to some challenges at work, that was put on hold. I eventually lost that job back in January and was between jobs until May. I'm fortunate that I landed at a great employer and was in a position to place an order.
In late April 2024, I placed an order the day that pricing was released. Long story short, I had some trust issues with that dealer that bubbled up in July and didn’t take delivery when it arrived in mid-October. I’m pretty sure they sold that jeep right away since I never saw it listed on their web site. I ended up placing a second order with Rob at Tuttle Click in Orange County in early August. I ordered a Rubicon X with the v6 and auto and its still waiting on D1 status at 76 days. Rob was great and recommend him if you’re on the west coast looking to place an order.
Fast forward to about a month ago. My employer let me know that my mostly work from home job would be moving from 1 day in the office and 4 remote to 4 days in the office and 1 remote. I can’t complain since when I hired on I expected to be in the office 5 days a week. Between my wife and me, we have 5 kids and all are either driving or close to being old enough to drive. Because of my work situation, we needed to add another vehicle to the family by the end of October.
Over the past month I spoke to two dealers in Idaho, one in New Mexico, two in OKC, one in Montana, and one in South Carolina. I ended up completing a sale with Quality Jeep in Greenwood, SC. They agreed to Affiliate Pricing at 1% under invoice. All the other dealers were either non responsive or wouldn’t budge off MSRP. I was really hoping the one in Montana would work out and squeeze in a quick trip through Yellowstone on the way back to Arizona.
The Rubicon X at Quality was configured exactly the way I wanted it - Sarge Green, v6, auto, step-assist rock rails, all-weather floor mats, and the front windows were already tinted. For me, it's perfect.
A few lessons learned in all of this: don’t order if you don’t know 100% that you trust the dealer and have things in writing, and that no matter what delays may occur that you can wait. I took the first dealer’s word and then a conversation was had in July that didn’t sit right with me. I knew when placing the second order in August the UAW was likely to strike. Here we are over a month later and no signs of the strike ending soon. Looking back, I wish I had just found what I was looking for on a dealer’s lot and worked out a deal.
About the contract with Quality. They’re on the smaller side of Jeep dealers in a smaller town. I’m not sure how many deals they do with out of state buyers, but there was a decent amount of back and forth on photos of IDs, insurance, etc over a period of a week or so. It would have been smoother if they had provided a list of everything that was needed. Also all the paperwork for the contract was overnighted to me versus doing it online. UPS ended up delaying the delivery of the paperwork back to the dealer which added a three days to the process. The dealer then waited until they had the money from the bank before they would give me a date when a shipper could pick it up. I understand their position, but guessing some of the dealers on this forum might handle that a bit differently. All said regarding Quality Jeep, great sales and finance team. Their first interest rate offer was higher than a credit union here in Arizona, and they came back later and beat it. Over all, very happy with the sales experience and would recommend them.
I took the forum’s recommendation and went with Bruce at Above The Rest as my broker for the shipping. I reached out to him during the contract phase of the Jeep and got a quote on cost and shipping time. Cost of shipping total was $1750, Rubicon was picked up the day after the loan was funded, picked up on Friday morning and dropped off Sunday at Noon. Bruce was great and recommend him.
The last three days have been awesome. I"ve had my wife and kids in the Jeep as much as possible. Windows down, radio up.
Life is good (again).
