I got a letter today, ostensibly from Jeep/FCA. Seems legit.

It’s offering an extended warranty. Called the number, and dude says I can get 8 years, 85k miles (you can choose your years and miles), bumper to bumper, for $2885.
Of course that’s only a 5 year extension, but still, $577 a year with all the electro-trash that’s virtually certain to go haywire on my Jeep, it seems reasonable.
But here’s the kicker!
Dude says I get all of my money back at the end of 8 years if I don’t use it.
Oh, and I have to do it today or tomorrow, because it’s going up 15% on Monday.
That scares me.
I was born at night, but not last night.
I’m intrigued, but skeptical.
Any thoughts?

Sounds a lot like a scam to me. If you can't do it at the dealer then its probably not through Jeep or FCA.

I've had 4 mopar extended warranties and fortunately never used one, that of course means after the regular Jeep warranty. Most Jeeps were over 3 years 36 and I did get "some" money back, never close to the amount paid! The refund check came to me directly from Chrysler so I believe the dealer had nothing to do with the refund?

I'd sure question the "full refund" if not used????

My 2018 JLUS extended mopar warranty same years and mileage you mention was $1250. thru my dealer. He matched some one line MoPar dealer's offer, his first price was such as you mention. Check that way first?

If you choose, do a mopar NOT an aftermarket warranty!!

Go Jeep!!!

Yea LOL, typical sales scam at it's finest, or shall I say the “finest print”.. you likely won't see a penny of it at the end of 8 years even if you don't use it.

you were smart to come to this forum first, or it would have a been a costly lesson.

Least I've ever received back on my extended MoPar warranties is $425, most $975. I have no idea how they figure it? I know it depends if you sell or trade some # of years into that extended warranty. Also you are correct if you get a 8 year/85k extended, it's minus your 36k/3 year original warranty! They just make it sound better!

Make sure you'll keep this vehicle longer than it's regular warranty, if so probably a good bet with all the "E" crap!

Go Jeep!!!

Thanks y’all.
The lyrics of a great Merle Haggard song come to mind:
“And we’ll all be drinking that free Bubble Up, and eating that Rainbow Stew.”
Prolly not.
The scammers are SO sophisticated now, though. It’s scary.
Or maybe I’m a blithering moron. That’s possible too.
Anyway, thanks.

I get emails all the time. Letters only come from Assure or whatever that scam is. And I totally can not imagine you getting your money back if you don't use it! Maybe I should tell my insurance that :CWL:

I wrote a college report when I was a statistics major about extended warranty payouts. It was about 20 years ago, but I remember the staggering low percentage of people who get their money worth on an extended warranty. Like, less than 10%. It's just like insurance; most of us pay for the other peoples' bad fortunes.

In most states it’s 100% within 30 days. After that it’s prorated based on time, less any claims.

Is FCA the administrator or is it someone like Assurant, Warrantech, etc. never heard of them doing an end of term refund. This sounds like a scam, especially with the deadline. That’s a pressure sales tactic.

There are a lot of marketing costs involved in third party warranties sold via direct mail (100-200% markup). Most new car warranties just reserve $500-800 for repairs per contract, the rest goes to marketing costs and profits go off shore to tax shelters (a retirement fund and piggy bank for the administrators and auto dealers).

I worked in that industry for a decade marketing products to consumers and dealers and would never buy an aftermarket contract. It’s a shady business. You’re much better off heading to your bank and putting that $2885 in a savings account.
