Woman Ejected As Jeep Rolls Down Switchbacks On Bridal Veil Road
Have driven Blackbear many times. Bridal Veil descent is the one part of the trail where you don't want to remain in a vehicle when bypassing switchbacks.

Hope she recovers. If she had stayed in the Jeep, I think the only thing one could hope was she didn’t suffer when crushed. Terribly bad way to learn the e-brake won’t hold..... :(

Done Black Bear many times also. Although a FIRM believer in seat belts, this is a time when being thrown probably saved her life. Had it been a BITD or SCORE approved cage in the Jeep it would be another story but that sure isn't the case with that Jeep.

I always have leave it in 1st when parking....would this also happen in 1st?
It can happen in any gear depending on the grade and the direction of the grade in relation to your parking.

It's normally not a big deal....if you have a working parking brake.

That’s terrible. Any updates on their conditions?

Last that I read was that he has been released from the hospital but that she is paralyzed from the waist down.

Later,

I agree! So one suggestion I've heard is to put your parking brake on, and then (gently) let off your brake pedal to make sure the parking brake is holding before you put your vehicle into gear (or park on an automatic). On my JK that was how I figured out that I had to pull the lever up higher than I was used to on other cars, because it didn't really grab until the end of its arm.

And of course, this reminds me just how important parking brake maintenance is! Thanks for that.

I remember when taking a Jeep tour over Black Bear, the driver had us unbuckle our seat belts starting above the steps with instructions that if we felt the vehicle start to go over the edge we should jump clear.

The non optional console makes it much harder to grab and properly set the E brake. Brother removed his in his JLUR. I immediately removed mine in the TJR. In the '87 XJ it was a $150 option I avoided. Got the tire carrier instead.

There's no substitute for chocking the tires after exiting the drivers side. C.W. McCall sings all about it.

Someone posted a video of the view from their Jeep as they came down Black Bear; this is absolutely incredible.

For the impatient, jump ahead to 3:17.

He was lucky he wasn't hit by it.

I'm not sure a full roll cage would have held up on that one. The whole Jeep folded up.
