The Dealership knows what the new car cost is (including the cost of inventorying the car), what your trade-in is actually worth, the cost of financing the cost of the add-ons, etc. and their plan is to make money on everyone one of these. The only 'unknown' is what you're willing to spend and they're pretty good at getting to that number. (That's one of the reasons they want you in the dealership to negotiate... also the longer you're 'on the hook' the easier it is for them). As for "ordering" without a firm price... wait 6-8 weeks for something you spec'ed (aka exactly what you want) and then trying to get a good deal is highly unlikely... you're too vested and are unlikely to walk away, which as Gee-pah said never hesitate to do
