MSRP of 42k?
might be back in 2019... It's atrociously expensive now. I can't even afford a sport 4xe brand new 2024 :D

Yesterday I test-drove a pre-owned 2022 Rubicon 4xe, here are my observations
  • No tangible difference in feel/drive quality (was expecting it to be the same)
  • Loved the full-EV driving and regen braking and coasting to stop. brought back memories of my Honda Insight.
  • Tried e-save and driving on gas only, the 2.0 is a tad coarse/rough sounding and gets to > 1800 rpms in slow traffic. I def heard more of the engine compared to my 3.6 v6
  • The moment I stepped into the Jeep, I realized how much effort has gone into my rig and how much of a pain it is to start it all from scratch. (Steering feel, tracking, ride height, etc..)
That last point hurt even more when I realized I am not going to get any value for the better-than-stock parts I have. Based on my calc, It looks like what I end up paying in addition to the trade-in is as much as the price of a Kia Sportage/Sorento PHEV base model (35 to 40k CAD).

It will take a min of 6+ years to break even and start realizing the savings in fuel costs.

That is a long time and life changes much more so quickly than that. It looks like in this inflated pricing it doesn't make sound economic sense to do the swap. I will hold on to my beloved Gray Wolf until the time it becomes a maintenance headache or develops any fundamental issues

Amazing you were able to snag a fully loaded Rubicon for below the base MSRP, basically you got all the options for free, and then some.

I save about $5,000CAD annually in gas with the 4xe, since the JL I really don't have any intention in keeping a Wrangler or any other vehicle beyond 3 years, my 2007 JK I had for 10 trouble free years, the only reason I went to a JK 4 door was because I needed space for a child seat.

I never really paid much attention to how much I was spending at the pumps until the 4xe came out, did the calculations, and figured it would pay for itself, and I wanted the SOT and LEDs.

The 4xe would be good for my wife as a work commuter as she is 20 miles round trip. Not the best for me if I have to actually go to my office. I am either 130 miles or 215 miles round trip depending on which office I have to go to. Before Covid I went to the closer office 5 days a week, now I have been 6 times in r last year. Eventually I would like to get into an EV or a hybrid but I want Tesla model 100 range or better capacity

Also keep in mind that the Gov is working on ways to tax EV to recoup the money they lose on gas taxes in the next few years.

Oooooohhh.. The Govt MAY invent a new tax in a few years. SCARY!

This is literally FUD.

I have saved over $2000 in gas in just over a year, compared to my last gas hog Grand Cherokee, per Fuelly.

I went wheeling yesterday. All of the 4-hi stuff was in electric mode, it was cool to hear birds in the forest. Drive your Jeep and don’t listen to those with Hybrid Derangement Syndrome.

I used the employee discount and a few others. I think my window sticker was about $48k but I don't have leather and also a manual trans, otherwise all options including cold weather, steel bumpers and towing.

I remember buying a Nissan Titan Pro4x fully loaded back in 2012 and thinking WOW $32k omg how am I ever going to pay this off?? :)

We're living in a different world now.

I think that’s the right choice for you, the prices of these newer vehicles are just crazy, it’s hard to justify switching over. And as you said, a minimum of 6 years just to finally break even, then you factor in that as you said, we are going to start paying more for our hydro here sooner than later as well.

I live in the Metro Vancouver area as well and feel your pain on the gas prices. We got our wrangler and a Hemi Durango and feel the sting at the pump, even driving to silverdale to save a bit more but still $150 or more to fill up my vehicle lol.

I would hold onto your current Jeep, especially since it sounds like this one has been quite reliable for you and checks off the rest of the boxes. Might not have the same luck on the next Jeep!

Yeah I get pissed every time when the pumps in lower mainland just jack up prices like they own the province.. I have been driving all the way to Mission to fill up over weekends (easily a min of $0.5 less per liter). I am also buying two rotopax auxiliary 20L cans to fill up when its cheap and stretch my luck further :|

You are right on the reliability part.. there are a lot more hit-miss on build quality on Jeeps that have build date > 2020 January. Mine is MY2020 built in the fall of 2019 and has not had any gremlins so far (74000 kms). Th Pentastar doesn't just die cold turkey so It does make sense to keep it around for longer until a time when its a pain in the ass to continue owning OR the enlightened government we have decides that the gas price should be $10 a liter.

One thing this whole fact finding led to me to re-confirm is that I am not going to go above the current lift height and 35s. It's the sweet spot where you only lose 1mpg but gain a lot more - beyond that tipping point the fuel consumption will go down south sharply. (the XR is a good ref for that sweet spot)

Yea we have a 2019 Sahara with the 3.6 and has been great to us, had the previous gen Pentastar in our old caravan that had 220k before we got rid of it and the engine was still solid as a rock. The rest of the van was falling apart lol

And I agree, 35’s is the max I would do on a daily around here. We currently have 33’s with a small Teraflex leveling kit and some Rubicon rock rails and it’s done the trick for now lol.

No, lol. Cali is already looking to not only charge a flat free to houses with solar panels (because they dont help pay for the electrical grid) but are also looking to add an EV tax onto your registration costs as you're not paying tax at the gas pump to help maintain the roads.

I'm surprised if anyone in so cal is actually saving money by buying a phev/electric vehicle unless they're literally getting their electricity for free. It's like 30-60 some cents per KWH depending on the time of day

The real tax coming down the pipeline is tax by mileage regardless if it's EV or gas.

What are 4xe's going for now? About 80k?
A few months back, I got my '23 4xe for ~$9,500 off sticker (no add backs like freight etc) and that was before the $7,500 tax credits.

And to the OP: I find it was the right choice for me. ~26 mile each way commute to work and lots of little trips throughout the week keep me running battery about 85% of my miles and almost all of my charging is done on a free network (Volta etc).

On long trips (on one now) I'm still about 8-10 mpgs better than my 2 door JKU (which in fairness was on 35" tires).

We often take the Rubicon over our M2 Comp just because it's fun. Arguably doesn't corner as well nor has cool burbly exhaust, but still fun.

I get an off-roadable vehicle that is commuter friendly that I seldom have to pay to power. We're semi-pariahs amongst some in the off-road community, but I get that change is hard so it doesn't bother me.

I drive a 2020 Sahara JLU and have about 75,000 trouble free and happy kilometers. My Jeep is a daily driver and weekend overlander - I drop and pickup my kids from school everyday which runs me about 20kms in the morning and 20kms in the afternoon. (That's out and back home 10+10km). Every week grocery runs are another 30kms and most other errands even out to under 50kms a month.

I was wondering if 4xe is a better Jeep for my situation as I potentially can cover 970kms of local driving per month in completely electric mode.

At 7kmpl (16.5mpg) that's about 140 liters and roughly $300 in commute fuel cost per month. Not including any weekend trips.

With gas prices getting record high here in Vancouver Metro Area, BC - Canada (Currently $2.05 per liter CAD) we were seriously giving a thought to trade in our beloved "Gray Wolf" and get a 4xe JLU.

There are a bunch of unknowns that I am still unclear about and would like opinion and ground truth from existing 4xe owners
  1. I am likely going to retain the same setup (35s on mild 1.5" lift). If I end up opting for a 4xe Rubicon instead of a Willys, will I be able to just plop 35s without needing to lift?
  2. What is the average fuel mileage (in mpg) on a 4xe when you are on very long trips and ev-battery is 0%? Do you still get around 20mpg at that situation?
  3. What is the reduction in EV range if you move from 33s to 35s (315/70/17)
Your replies, opinions and thoughts are much appreciated !

Looking to clone this setup over to a 4xe. Sad to see "Sting Gray" go away as color option.. will be ok to settle for "Anvil" or "Granite"

As a former owner I would not. It is a good concept but mine was at the dealership more then in my driveway. If you charge fully everyday it does very well on mileage. But ours had a continuous check engine light. Never could fix it. It was a evap problem. Very hard to find. It will be a good concept just not ready yet. Lots of technical parts

There's a TSB to replace the gas cap AND the entire filler neck. Fixes it 99% of the time

May have but the dealers I had it at 2. Would not listen or even look at a TSB. I told them about it. Guess they thought they were smarter then Jeep. But they did the right thing gave us our money back and bought a 23 Jeep non 4xe. Zero problems
