I stand corrected. I am not all the familiar with the Dana axles and just assumed a modern high strength steel was being used. Everything I could find alluded to either 1040 or one specific reference to the JL 44 cited 1050. Of course, both are plain carbon steels of .40 and .50 carbon respectively. Now my dilemma is: the repair parts are about $100 and the new left and right axle assemblies are about $400. My JLUR is fundamentally stock and I don't plan on rock crawling or such. I'm not planning on installing substantially larger tires. I'm just not leaning toward the 4000 series chromoly axles.
