Large Tires vs. Wheel Uptravel

For very rocky and rutty terrain, which one would be more important: 315/70R17 tires at the expense of a small loss of wheel uptravel, say 10mm per wheel and the need to use a limiter, or 285/70R17 tires but with slightly more wheel uptravel, the 10mm per wheel?

depends on the size of the rocks.
Yep, having the wider footprint, especially aired down would play a bigger role as far as grip w/ the larger contact patch. So wider w/ a limiter would probably be the best route to take (assuming your wheels have the proper offset for the wider tire set).

I wish they still made wide tires that weren't too tall like back in the day where a 34x14.5 was common.
