I thought that, too....but not sure they ship 'em filled w gear oil? Seems like this would be FCA's checklist for final assembly?

Otherwise kinda feels like shipping a crate engine with oil in it.

But I really don't know, maybe they do ship pre-filled
Yes when axles such as some rubicon ones with locker issues they donā€™t even, well at one point earlier on in the year didnā€™t want anyone going in and replacing it. So they would ship on a crate a full assembly also filled.

Again, unless we hear of updated parts Jeep's solution ATM is to just replace it with the exact same shit.

You all remember the definition of insanity???

I think I've been going about this all wrong. I reported a noise on my 2018, recorded that noise and provided sample audio of a good sounding 2019 but was told that the noise was normal for the design. The problem with non-specific symptoms is that they can be interpreted to be a great many things including "non-issues". It ends up being an "I said, they said" situation.

I came across the trak-loc lsd torque test in the 2018 JL service manual. The results I got were much less than the stated minimum, my wheel turned without effort. Now I feel that I have a specific customer concern to report to the dealership and that they will be able to repeat it using their own test procedure. Hoping this is the foot in the door that I need to have a bit more investigation performed.

I was going to attach the manual page but remembered terms and conditions so i'm staying inside the lines. The manual was available @ https://www.techauthority.com/

Also I don't know if it'll do any good but I've decided to let Dana know on their Contact page my experience with the M220 w/ LSD. Respectfully of course but as the an end user I'm not entirely satisfied.

I fared no better with my visit to the dealership. While leaving the dealership this morning I clearly indicated that I did not agree with their diagnoses. I had provided audio from my jeep 2018(noisy) and my wife's 2019 (completely smooth) but that did not seem to make a difference.

It appears a TSB or the back end completely failing is the only way it'll be addressed via the dealership.

At the end of my visit this morning the case specialist called me within minutes of leaving the dealership. At the end of our conversation I was offered a free extension of the Basic/Driveline warranty to 100K/5yrs with $100. I accepted that but also not giving up on getting this issue resolved.

Attached are audio zip files of the noise from my 2018 rear differential and our 2019's quiet Diff (only break pad on disc noise heard) and a paperwork trail.

Just got a 2018 unlimited sahara 6 speed. Have the dana 44 upgrade, Has 9k on it. Excellent jeep. I hope. Steering fixed kinda with recall part. When shifting gears manually little clunk at gear shift and gas applied and let off. Clearly a little clunk with acceleration and deceleration. Its like an old fashioned u joint slop. Just noticed it today haven't had time to investigate. Found this thread and am sad. @JeepCares is this fixable and what do I do. All warrantied up. Tell me how to fix. Thanks.

I just read all 37 pages of this saga and am left wondering if i should drop everything and change the rear diff fluid and add friction modifier in hopes that my Jeep will be spared. My JL sport with LSD barely has 600mi on it and now I learn that it may have a serious congenital defect.

Well I wouldn't panic - these things have a way of settling. When the GM motors showed up with piston slap everyone was sure the sky was falling but it mostly turned out to not be a big deal and only some trucks ever had symptoms. Ford Triton spark plug stupidity, etc etc.

All these problems wind up affecting only a portion of the total, or the aftermarket addresses it (GM pump rub)

But it wouldn't hurt to change your diff fluid and add friction modifier. I would as cheap insurance. And I wouldn't tell FCA in case you still have problems later. I don't think we've confirmed this is really the problem, so, again, it'd just be "cheap insurance"

I'm all for holding manufacturers accountable, but there's actually a lot of JL's already on the road and I'd guess it's a small percentage having problems.

Now, is it too soon to know - - I mean, the JL is a relatively new vehicle. Possibly. It's entirely possible that by 50,000 miles 60% of rear axles will be experiencing the noise. Or not. And it sucks that warranty ends at 36k.

Will FCA try to string people along until they're out of warranty? Maybe. And there might even be a class action suit (Ford TFI) or warranty extension by the manufacturer - I think GM was pressured to extend warranty coverage on some of the piston slap motors to 100k

But yeah, some people are getting a bit too worked up. It's capitalism, business, and manufacturing. Nothing we haven't seen 1000 times before.

Go enjoy your JL's and face the problems as they come!

Hi Kurt,
As we are not mechanically trained, we do rely on our dealers in the field to diagnose and address vehicle concerns. If you would like, we would be happy to connect you with a Case Specialist to work with you and your dealer throughout this process. Please feel free to send our team a private message!

EVERYONE ON THIS THREAD SHOULD STOP WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND READ THIS ^^^^^

I've been thinking about this ever since I rotated my tires about 6 months ago. All other vehicles I know of have some preload on the limited slip so you can't turn the one tire with both them both off the ground and the transmission in gear, park or the brake on. Mine spin freely which tells me the clutch packs are shot. If the limited slip isn't working then that is a legitimate warranty service and reason to open the cover. Once they open it up I'm sure they will find the metal particles and chewed up gears.

2018 Unlimited Sport S with the Dana 44 LSD here with this very same issue. I first noticed it the morning after putting on my new 285/75/R17 tires. I can reliably reproduce the sound when coasting between 15-10MPH, and it seems to match the rotation of the driveshaft. This is really bumming me out as I have a trip planned this Wednesday and I won't be able to get it into the dealership before then.

I'm going to put my old tires on to see if the sound is still there. My first thought was that I had a bad tire, but I've checked 4 out of 5 them and the sound is still there.

Update:

Put my old tires on and the sound is gone. I'm still skeptical that there is a problem with my tires because I swapped each tire out and could still hear it.

For next steps I'm guessing that I'll contact discount tires direct to make sure there isn't an issue with any of my tires. From there on I'll go the dealership route.

I just don't want them to blame the wheels and tires.
