Wow, just stumbled across this thread. How long have people had their jeeps before this issue has become apparent? I have a Sport with the LSD and am at about 2k miles. Also I was looking over the article on the main page with the TSB list and didn’t see one for this yet. Thanks.
Mine went out at 9k, and again at 12k

Is this the kind of thing you can run with for a while or does it need immediate attention? If I’m on a long road trip and it develops can it get me home without damage?

I did another thousand miles or so after the second time it started knocking. I was also in the middle of a roadtrip. I doubt there will be a catastrophic failure, but there will be irreversible damage...like it isn't already damaged
13k miles for the first replacement
21k miles for the second replacement
Currently at 35,9xx miles and holding my breath lol

My Dealer changed out my rear drive shaft. Unfortunately it didn’t fix the problem. Still have the same rotating knocking noise at slow unloaded speed. Waiting on a phone call back from my Case Specialist to discuss the next step.
Case Specialist called today. Taking it back to the Dealer Monday for further evaluation.

So after no help from the dealer, I traded it in for a 2 door JLR. And choose a different dealership. The noise was absolutely not normal. But all I ever got was it's normal. Called it quits on that jl.

Well everyone....after more than a year and (literally as I dropped the JLU off this morning) 19,995kms, I was able to have the dealership diagnosis my noise to the rear differential. The tech called me and said the inside was chewed up and they have ordered me a new rear axle. Can't tell you how excited and elated I was to hear them finally checking what I had been telling them for nearly a year what the issue was. Just so everyone knows and FCA, I had to take it to another dealership because the first dealership had given up and I quote "just drive it till it breaks, then we'll know where the issue is.". Pathetic really.

I will update once the work is completed. Bout' F'n time!

LOL, that is pathetic actually. It's not difficult for a dealer tech to pull a diff cover....

My results from my appointment. It still has the rotational knocking noise as before. I think I’m installing an ARB locker and 4:56 gears shortly.

I am have a rear knocking noise occurring really good when coasting at 13 mph but happens when going faster ask well. ben to the dealership 4 times for this thus far. they can’t get it to make the noise on the lift either and my 2018 jeep sahara jl has. a 2” lift which when they lift it due to the suspension is causing my e brake to engage so they got it up on jacks and got rear tires to spin but won’t make noise without the weight on the frame etc. i spoke to a casmanager today and they were much help she told me to bring this thread to my technician and see if they have a thought. the techs are baffled at the noise they can only get it to make it when driving it and have no idea!!! where are you located maybe the dealerships can talk!

I know this thread is labeled knock after lift, but I don’t think the lift has anything to do with it. I have had mine (JLUS) in shop 8 days this go round, they originally ordered rear ring / pinion to resolve knock noise. Upon install they found carrier bearings spun and ordered complete rear differential assembly. I’m hoping it will be installed by tomorrow, although they still have other repairs and diagnosis still left to do. I’m sure this concern will become more common and we’re just starting to hear about it. FYI I have the Dana 44 rear. Good luck with getting yours diagnosed and repaired sooner than later.[/QUOTE

what dealership did you get this taken care of my dealership can’t figure this out and trying to get them in touch with someone who has had same issue!

So I got mine back from the shop on Friday night, after just shy of 3 weeks! The rear differential assembly (Dana 44 lsd) was replaced with new axels and noise is gone at this time. Spider gear set was all chewed up and pitted, abnormal wear pattern on carrier bearings and axle bearings, along with axel shafts slugged up. Hope everyone gets this issue addressed quicker than I did. Now I’m just waiting on new drag link(on order)

Where are you located and what dealership completed this? i am trying to get mine taken care off and they can figure out where noise is coming from and case manager is t helping cuz there’s no star cases on this they say!
