Just wanted to provide an update to my situation for reference. Dealer gave me the runaround the first time in telling me they couldn't replicate the noise (queue extreme eye rolling). They did however decide to replace my steering box for the TSB no questions asked so I don't know what their deal is.

I spent some time this weekend figuring out how to prove to them there's a problem and it didn't take long. I jacked up the rear axle and spun the tires like others have tried, and sure enough it sounded like an old roller coaster climbing a hill. I don't think that's how an axle should sound. I could turn the driveshaft nearly a quarter revolution before it locked up. Hopefully that's enough to convince the service tech at the dealer? Is it even safe to drive with the rear axle messed up so much? I mean I have no choice, it's my only vehicle. It just seems like the problem is a hundred times worse having heard the axle close up.

It's also been two weeks and still haven't received a call from a jeep wave specialist about my case. Anyone have a number I can call other than trying to contact them through jeep cares?

I too wonder if it is safe to drive. It took over 2 weeks for my case manager to call me. And that was after a lot of complaining from me on why I had not received a call. The last 3 times I have dealt with this the case managers communicated promptly. Not sure what the deal is this time around (I'm still dealing with the issue, Jeep currently at the dealer).

Try this number: 844-378-0597

Hey thanks for the number. Yeah I don't know, maybe they're short handed or something. That whole virus paranoia has made a huge mess of everything. I wouldn't be surprised if they laid off half their staff to keep their profits from dipping.

Took mine into Scott Robinson in Torrance, CA. They were awesome about it and are replacing the entire rear axle assembly. Replacement part number is 68401151AD. No complaints about my mopar lift.
This is where I took my Jeep as well. Had a tech ride along with me so that he could hear the sound. I also showed him how to reproduce it so he could test it on his own. I got my Jeep back two days later.

My 2019 Sahara is bone stock and recently I have been experiencing a slight knock when I accelerate after slowing to enter a turn or at an intersection (slow speeds). It is not every time but seems like it’s getting more frequent. I have yet to call the dealer but will need to get it in. After reading this it sounds like they have no idea how to properly address the issue. Repeated axle replacement is not fixing the problem for some people.

Just an update on my situation. Got my Jeep cares case closed because the dealer gave me my car back while waiting for parts (Unrelated to the axle issue). Also found out that FCA is limiting part orders for dealers to 1 part every 2 weeks. So those parts everyone is waiting so long for probably aren't out of stock, they're just being restricted. Im probably going to take it to a different dealer to diagnose the axle because I'm not waiting a month and a half just to try convincing them all over again when I bring it back for other issues. I've had to drive my jeep a bit this past week since it's been too cold to bike to work and I need groceries, and it's starting to sound really bad.

So I just wanted to report that at exactly 20k miles later I am having the same issue again.

Long story short:

@ 20k on the ODO I had this issue. Took it in. They replaced the rear carrier assembly. It fixed the problem.

Now I am @ 40k on the ODO. Same issue. They cannot replicate the issue which makes sense as it hasn’t gotten worse yet but IS happening from time to time. This time worse when it happens.

Going to ride with a tech tomorrow and hopefully it does it. If not I’ll take it back and wait until it gets worse like last time.

Interesting, right around 20k was when mine got really bad. This is my first axle though, haven't been able to get it replaced yet.

Yeah man I am hoping this isn’t a trend... I’m not doing this shit every 20k miles.. Took over a month last time due to a parts constraint.. Its not the dealerships fault but it’s very annoying. I wanted to give this to my oldest son when he is of age in a few years but if this continues I could not in right mind do that.

Yeah I was told by my jeep cares rep the dealer was only allowed to order 1 part every two weeks period, so there's a huge waitlist just to order parts.

I can tell you that there is no way that a dealership can only order (1) part every two weeks.. So that certainly is not true whatsoever. They would be out of business if that were the case.

I have a 2020 sport s that is stock and I’ve had this knock noise in the rear for almost the entire time I’ve owned it. It’s getting more frequent and louder as I add miles but it only happens when I’m going slow around a parking lot or something similar. No clue what it is or even where to start the diagnosing.

It’s inside your rear carrier assembly. Take it to the dealership, tell them there Is a knock in your rear diff. They’ll replace the rear carrier assembly.

I was told they no longer replace rear axles as it was becoming too costly for them. They can no longer justify replacing the entire axle as Chrysler says it is not effective enough over just replacing the rear carrier.

It’s understandable however I’ll be on my second rear carrier assembly on Tuesday... Not sure how cost effective it is at this point.

If the trend continues with mine it’ll happen again at 60k on the ODO.

Had my first one replaced at 20k and now exactly at 40k it’s doing it again...

They may have you ride with a technician. If yours is like mine, you’ll need to warm it up drive for a bit and hit every red light you can. My does it most as take off. It’s sort of a delay... then THUD sound. The key is to be stopped for me and then take off at normal speed. I can also get it to happen if a stop sort of abruptly and take off again.

Hope that helps good luck and let us know how it goes. Don’t let it go or eventually your clutch packs will be shot. It’ll get much worse. Believe me. Don’t want to go off road and have your rear diff take a shit. Not fun.

I've had this issue for the last year. Was rare at the beginning but it happens from a dead stop every time now. I don't want to be in and out of dealerships all the time so I'm wondering if I should just save up for and install Rubi take-offs and be done with it. This is only for the LSD D44 correct?

It is more prominent in the LSD 44 Rear however there have been reports, I believe in this thread of it happening to Rubi’s. It’s been awhile since I last read all the pages though.

In my opinion this should be a star case or at a minimum a TSB @JeepCares but it hasn’t happened yet for whatever reason. It’s not a cheap fix I can tell you that and the parts a usually on back order and probably for good reason. Unbelievable engineering hasn’t investigated this yet.

It’s clearly more prominent in LSD 44 rears so that might workout for you.
