Mine is back in the shop for a 3rd time for this issue. First 2 times they replaced the carrier assembly. It did fine for a few thousand miles then started knocking again. I took it to a different shop this time around (recommended by a forum member). The new shop called me today and said they are ordering an entire rear axle. Unfortunately, the axle is on back order until early May. So I'm stuck driving a gangster looking Chrysler 300 rental for now. I'm hoping this will finally fix the knocking issue. Has anyone had the differential start knocking again after a full axle replacement?
I don't see how a complete replacement will be any different than a carrier replacement. It just saves the shop some labor as I'd imagine it's actually easier to swap the complete axle/housing

If the issue is the LSD clutches deteriorating (and I think it is based upon info in this thread and the black gear oil), replacing the carrier or the entire axle has the same result.

My assumption is that it will continue to happen until Dana and FCA can come up with a proper fix. Replacing the carrier or entire axle assembly with the same part will stop the knocking for a while but i believe it will come back.

Yep, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result is ________

I have this issue. Whats are the cons of ignoring it? Will i damage something else?
Most likely, yes. For one there would be lots of contaminants in your gear oil. This will prematurely wear wheel bearings, carrier bearings and pinion bearings.

The issue seems to be spider and side gear interference, so that's metal on metal in ways there shouldn't be (spider and side gears always interface, though) so theoretically you'll just get more and more metal in your gear oil.

I'm not aware of anyone left stranded from this yet though (maybe I've missed it?) but if a spider or side gear eventually grenaded (probably after warranty is up) you wouldn't be going anywhere. Similarly heavily contaminated gear oil could destroy any of the bearings, and any one is catastrophic --- but it would (should) make a lot of noise and give warning before a bearing failure.

I had the dealer do a rear axle oil change on my '20 Willys at 2000 miles, cost me @ $200.

Hope that getting some clean fluid in there early makes a difference!

Yeah, that's my fear. I'm considering Rubi swap, but really don't want to spend the money right now. You would think FCA would at least give a significant discount on Rubi axles if they can't fix the issue.

I have that knocking noise very much engraved in my head, every time I come coasting to a stop, I am almost expecting it but currently not there. But yeah, I don't see it lasting much longer before it comes back again.

We're sorry to hear that you are also experiencing this. Should you decide to visit your dealer, please send our team a PM. We would be happy to connect you with a Case Specialist to assist.

I have a 2018 JLU and it has been making a noise coming from the rear. I hear it when I would push in my clutch and coast. I took it into a dealership and they told me my rear differential was ā€œgoing outā€. Any advice on what else I need to ask them to check out related to this.... while they have it? I would assume they would know what to check but I have lost faith in some dealerships from past Jeep repairs in older jeeps (death wobble).

I wanted to update everyone on what was going on with my jeep and how it was repaired. I took it to our local dealership and explained to the repair guy what was going on and he was familiar with the problem. He indicated that they had already fixed a few other 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) for the same problem. He says the rear differential was going out. Basically the carrier clutch had burned out and overheated which caused a tons of other issues! He actually indicated that he suspects I would be back in the shop with the very same problem soon! So I decided to change the gear ratio in my Jeep to 4:88. When i purchased my jeep it was stock and then I had a 3 inch lift and 34's put on it. I have a 6 speed manual transmission but NEVER used 5th or 6th gear, even when I rolled off the lot, all stock! But now, there is a huge difference in how my Jeep runs.

I should let everyone know some of the problems I encountered with swapping the gears! :) I also had to have the front differential changed to match up with the rear. Well apparently, a manual transmission these days isn't really manual!! My computer system in the jeep was not recognizing the new gear ratio! I got a warning about the start/stop feature needing service and my back up camera would not work all the time. I found out the start/stop warning is related to multiple issues!! I had to take my jeep back over to the dealership and they had to calibrate my computer system for the proper axle gear ratio and then my shifter lost calibration as well. Then they had to do an update on my radio so that the computer would recognize when I went into reverse so my back up camera would engage!

With all that said, I am very pleased (so far) with the improvements on the Jeep!!

Soooo.... did you do a different carrier/TAD when swapping ratios? If you kept the stock LSD the new gear set won't change a thing.

You can change ratios and tire sizes yourself with a Tazer. They're not incredibly cheap but handy.

Picked my Jeep up on Thursday. Full differential swap this time.. fingers crossed. This new shop was great to deal with. Jeep Cares has been great as well. The proof is in the pudding though. Let's see how long this fix lasts.

Iā€™m happy with the end result. My only concern now is how likely is it to happen again? I assume the replacement part was the same as the original so Iā€™d imagine it could pop up again.

I guess I should have bought that Rubicon with the lockers.
According to my local parts dept, The clutch pack is no longer available separately but is now sold complete as an updated assembly with the case.

I am experiencing the same problem!! I was able to make a video of it. See link below.

Knocking noise while coasting/decelerating through 15 to 7 mph.

The dealer thought is was a broken inner rod on the rear driveshaft. The replaced the read driveshaft this week. That didnā€™t do anything. Anyone know what this is? Please help!! Thanks in advance!!

Add me to the list. Taking into dealer next Tuesday to have them look at it. Noticed it clunking about a dozen times already - coasting at about 10-12 mph or less. Definitely sounds like carrier/spider gears in the diff. Just turned 20k miles.
