About to be two weeks in the shop and they still haven't figured out where the noise is coming from. They mentioned that they are still diagnosing it and that they opened the rear differential and everything in there looked good besides being a bit dirty. Not sure how true this is but since they haven't figured it out, now they are blaming it on my Metalcloak lift, claiming that it puts the axles at a stressed angle. They claim the mopar lift wouldn't have caused this because it uses ujoints instead of cv joints.

One week at the dealer now, at least I have loaner JL. Yesterday they tried to get me to pick up and finally had the tech ride with me and experience it. I even paid for an hour of labor to have them "tighten" the suspension components to prove it wasn't my rock krawler lift.

At this point I guess the only solution is buying better aftermarket axles or rubicon take offs

Go to another dealer, first dealer would not even look at, 2nd has been extremely helpful, with the assistance of Jeep Wave. If you call Jeep Wave they will get you a case a loaner.

JeepCares has been helpful. I made sure to contact them before taking it to the dealer. I feel like this was the only reason they were able to do warranty work on it. So I’m thankful for them. I did contact My FCA case specialist today and she informed me that they finally confirmed that the noise was indeed coming from the rear axle. She mentioned they might be able to swap it out and see if the noise disappears. If it doesn’t, then they will need me to go back to the shop where I installed the lift. So lets hope that they do replace the entire axle. Btw I was also given an loaner. Unfortunately it is a Cherokee. :(

Replacement axle can be cheaper than labor on entire new guts I was told.

Hello,

New member here. 2018 Jeep Sport Unlimited, manual trans, about 15K miles on it.
I noticed a knocking noise as well. It seems like it knocks when the Jeep is cold and usually under 20mph. I don't have anything crazy on it. 18' KMC Grenade wheels, 33'inch Toyo's and oem suspension from 2019 Rubicon.
Took it to the dealer in Langhorne, PA. After 3 days, they said "cross threaded screw in my front bumper" was making that noise....
I have Rugged Ridge Spartacus bumper (it's garbage, i know) and one of the screw got stripped and sticking out a bit on the bottom. But, it's solid and the whole bumper does not rattle or anything like that.
That dealership has been helpful before. My soft top ripped and they swapped it our for better one (sail cloth) and did the steering recall in a day.
I'm guessing i should wait a bit, maybe it will get worse and take it back to them.

But there's also no way you should be able to freely spin the tires in opposite directions on an LS diff unless it's already fried.
Just an update. Took it to a different dealership with the help of @JeepCares and the tech I rode with acknowledged the noise I was concerned about (albeit it was not knocking as loud as it normally does on warmer days, there's a cold snap here in Pennsylvania right now and it doesn't happen as often while cold) and the sloppy feel in the drive train. They took a sample of my diff fluid and it was much darker than it should be for only having 13,000 miles. Had the diff cover pulled and the technician could see the clutch packs not engaging at all when you spin the wheels, the spider gears and bearings were chewed up a bit, and the rear was acting like an open differential instead of a limited slip. Parts should be coming in within 5 days all under warranty. :please:

Exact same issue with my 2018 JLU Sport. 12,000 miles/manual transmission. Very pronounced problem between the first three gears when coasting down the clunking in the rear starts. Can feel it through the pedals and steering wheel and hear it audibly. First two times I brought it into the dealer they said it was a loose rocker panel the first time and when I asked them to check the diff fluid the second time they said the black color is normal. This time when I took it in I emailed them these forum threads and detailed the issue. They confirmed today that they hear the problem and since there's no available diff bearings and collars they are replacing the rear axle assembly and ordered two new axles. going to be a week without my jeep.
Dealer: Enumclaw Chrys/Jeep/Dodge - Washington State.

So I opened up the cover on my rear D44 LSD after I finished swapping both axles for the Rubicon takeoffs and this is the lube that came out. Didn't really find any metal particles, but there didn't seem to be a lot of fluid. I did notice some small particles that weren't metal, could be the plastic bearing cages that have been talked about. It's never been opened before and there have been no leaks, so I can only assume this is all the fluid that was in it from the factory. I drained the pan and basically got one quart and maybe another 8 oz. The ring and pinion seem fine, but there was a lot of slop on the side gears to the axle shaft splines.
