Get a hold of @JeepCares and have a star case (claim) opened, and get it to the dealer ASAP, they’ll get it addressed. Once a case is opened it definitely helps get feedback direct from FCA to technician, corporate knows what’s going on and will get it sorted. Unfortunately I think many dealers or technicians are shipping these concerns out without tech touching base with tech support at corporate level. I will say this, it was a huge headache for me having this all figured out and taking 3 weeks with part holdups and lots of diagnosis, but Jeep cares, my case manager, and dealership were all extremely helpful and had great service, yes it took a while but it’s handled now and I’m a happy camper. Good luck y’all, hope you get it all sorted out soon without much trouble!
do you know what your case number was or manager?

So just got word from my dealer. Rear end is chewed up, parts are on order won’t be in for one week. And it’s not driveable. They couldn’t tell me exactly what failed. I’ll get more info and keep y’all updated

what dealership replaced it!

I fared no better with my visit to the dealership. While leaving the dealership this morning I clearly indicated that I did not agree with their diagnoses. I had provided audio from my jeep 2018(noisy) and my wife's 2019 (completely smooth) but that did not seem to make a difference.

It appears a TSB or the back end completely failing is the only way it'll be addressed via the dealership.

At the end of my visit this morning the case specialist called me within minutes of leaving the dealership. At the end of our conversation I was offered a free extension of the Basic/Driveline warranty to 100K/5yrs with $100. I accepted that but also not giving up on getting this issue resolved.

Attached are audio zip files of the noise from my 2018 rear differential and our 2019's quiet Diff (only break pad on disc noise heard) and a paperwork trail.

SOOO...I know I'm wasting my breath here but we need to know exactly what is causing this -- and trust me there IS an exact cause.

I fear most people on this forum don't really know all the components of a diff so we're not getting any hardcore tech here, but eventually the problem will be concisely articulated (most likely in the aftermarket before FCA ever admits to anything)

I don't know if it's inferior metallurgy, poor tolerances or poor design, but clearly something is going on with pinion bearings or carrier bearings, carrier, r&p, spider gears or side gears. Maybe also clutch packs but ONLY IF only LSD's are affected. Could be poor machining of the "pumpkin" casting , too

I personally don't think it's axleshafts and if wheel bearings are failing I'd say that's collateral damage from polluted gear oil.

There have been plenty of diffs with known weak points - weak points that were resolved with workarounds later. On the Ford 10.25 the ring gear bolts were known to back out; shouldered bolts from a D70 would fix that. The Ford 8.8 Crap-Lok LSD carrier would sometimes simply crack in two because they had to remove so much material to fit the clutch packs in there. And on and on

In 3 years it will be well known that "the early M220's had a problem with X" where X is a specific mechanical component of the axle assy. I'm just curious as hell about what X is....

So after skimming about a half dozen pages of this monster thread, am I correct in understanding that this issue is limited exclusively to the Dana 44 rear axles equipped with LSD and no others?

For the most part yes. Some Rubicon owners are getting rear axles replaced for locker electronics failure. Not the same issue but it's been conflated.

I wanted to give an update. I got a new rear axle at 3,000 miles back in mid July. Well I've put 2,500 miles on it since and I have no noise yet....but! I had my first oil change today and they checked the diff oil. The front diff oil looked like new but the rear was black and they recommended replacing it. I told them the whole story about the new axle. I know it's just a matter of time before it goes out again and that really bums me out. The only good wrangler I've had was my 97 TJ! I'd really like there to be updated parts but I'm not holding my breath. I think it's the limited slip that's the issue. I'm trying to decide if I end up getting another new axle do I just buy the parts to make it an open diff? There was another member here that bought the parts to change his diff to an open diff and it solved his issue. Just frustrated. I went against my better judgement and bought a Chrysler.....you don't buy a Chrysler....you only lease them!!!

It’s kind of concerning that @JeepCares is
not knowledgeable about this issue.

The following reply from @JeepCares led me to believe that this is a known problem and that Jeep was working on a solution. Maybe I read too much into it - I hope not.

Hi Everyone,

Our teams are aware of this concern. Our executive leadership is engaged and working with the appropriate parties to have a resolution implemented as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you are experiencing a clunk/knock/thump, please make an appointment with your dealer and send us a private message. We are happy to create and escalate a case on your behalf to have additional assistance throughout the repair process.

I too believed that FCA had acknowledged the problem and investigating a solution based on that statement. I even provided JeepCares statement to my dealership at the end of my unsuccessful visit last week.

I think my JL Sahara is exhibiting the knocking issue but the dealership told me the sound is normal. I took it in to take care of the steering stabilizer recall, and since I was already at the dealership I asked them to look into the noises coming from the rear axle. They took care of the steering stabilizer, but told me that the technician drove my vehicle and compared it to other JLs and that the sound was normal. Doesn't sound normal to me for a completely stock 2018 JLU Sahara with only 20000 miles to make knocking sounds.
Asking those of you who successfully resolved their axle problem, did you go to other dealerships until you found one to address the issue, or did you contact Jeep Cares first?
