While don't they just make a nice silicone cover that does not have the key slot? That would prevent the "jeep key pocket boner" completely, and If you really need the key (I don't think I have yet... ever), just slip the sleve off.

Out of curiosity, would the RFID chip work on its own to lock/unlock and start the Jeep without a battery or the rest of the fob?

The RFID chip alone won't lock/unlock the vehicle. It can start the rig without a fob battery provided it is touching/all but touching the pressed start button, the brake pedal is depressed, and the vehicle's starter battery/ies (ICE propulsion) are functional.

@AnebuR
With just the RFID Chip you can start the JL and drive it.....press the chip firmly against the starter button with your foot on the brake pedal and the JL will start...

For proximity to work as well as lock/unlock, and to start the JL, all you need is battery and circuit board.... no RFID chip necessary for those.

I was having trouble with one of my FOBs and went to change out the battery. It was the original Panasonic battery. SNAFU. The battery leaked on the circuit and even after cleaning with a Q-tip and alcohol and a spray of contact cleaner, it is toast. It's a 2018 FOB. Never had a battery leak like this in a FOB. I wonder how much a new FOB is? BOHICA.

You are a poster child so to speak, ofwhy it is extremely important to change out a fob's (any fob) at least yearly even if you do not use that fob/ it is in storage... This is good practice on anything that uses batteries... change batteries at least yearly and you are less app to have battery leakage damage or electrode/terminal damage due to corrosion, etc..

A new fob, programmed will run you $225+-.

p.s. The RFID chip in it is still usable... it will allow you to start your JL.

After @AnebuR 's last post I got to thinking.... thinking that there may be a guy or gal that really would like one of these DI Labs, aftermarket fobs but are hesitant in regard to purchasing as they are squeamish, about taking the RFID chip out of the stock fob...

Or, maybe they want to try/use the DI Labs fobs for a while to see if they like it, before they remove the RFID chip which is a tad more work then the simple stock fob disassembly process..

Sure, it takes a little effort to get the RFID chip out....

Anyway, a solution!

You or anyone at that, in less then two minutes, take the circuit board and battery out of the stock fob. You can do that and then just hide (Hide it well) the gutted stock fob with the RFID chip still in it, in your JL.

You would want to have the stock fob shell with the RFID chip hidden in the JL/JT, just in case your fob battery ever went dead in the fob, or the circuit board in the fob died, etc.. (rare event)

Your DI labs fobs without the RFID chip will work just as if the chip was in it...

You do not need the RFID chip.... only time you need it is if the fob stops working and you have to push the chip against the start button while you foot is on the brake pedal to start the JL.

SO, an alternative for those that are adamant that they do not want to remove the RFID chip, but still would enjoy having/using a DI Labs fob, do consider this alternative.

Yeah, but it still sucks to have a battery leak. Never had a coin type battery leak in a FOB. I run my other vehicles til the battery starts failing. Usually a few years. Changied out the good FOB's battery with a Duracell.

But, I found FOBs for $125 ea. Bought 2 from a online Mopar dealer. Keys ready cut from the VIN. Still need programming. I have a local guy that did another vehicle that required a commercial electronic programmer.

@roaniecowpony

Over the years I have seen quite a few forum posts (various vehicles) where fob batteries had leaked and killed a circuit board... it happens... probably more so with el-cheapo off brand batteries.

$125 for the fob is not bad and then the sizeable programming costs... You'll in the end pay $200+ for the new programmed fob...

Remember save that RFID chip and the rest of that damaged stock fob.

I was wondering....what would happen after changing the battery you dripped some candle wax on it and its prongs?

Might this not only somewhat protect the battery from moisture, but also possibly contain any potential battery leak from the circuitry?

$200 sounds pretty reasonable to program a couple fobs. All in all, Jeep stuff is pretty cheap relative to some other makes.

I'll have to verify the RFID chip actually still works.

@Jjirish

Not going to happen..... the bracelet would have to be big enough to hold the circuit board and the fob battery...

An alternative....especially if your JL has proximity....
For someone that wanted / that wants a way lets call it.... you could buy a Model M from DI labs and water proof it. To do so would be easy..

The M is so so small and so so light that you could/can wear it around your neck on a lanyard.... or pinned onto your bathing suit top or bottom, etc...
