So, this story actually starts in late 2019, when I almost bought a 2019. I had custom-ordered one, but when it arrived it did not have the aux switches in the dash, so I walked away from the deal, and I am so glad I did. About a month after leaving the first deal, the news was finally announced that orders were starting to be taken for the new diesel, and I couldnā€™t believe how close I was to missing out. I placed the order for Jungkook a week before my birthday in January, and it finally arrived on April 1st. When the salesman called me to tell me it had arrived, I seriously thought he was simply playing an April Fools joke on me, and then was going to give me an update. However, he then sent a pic of it, as well as the window sticker, which of course had my name on it, so I knew he was for real. I was at the dealer within 30 mins, and I could not believe how awesome my new toy was.

The first ā€œthingā€ I bought for the Jeep was a Quadratec cover, so I could drive it to work topless/odorless and not worry about it. As you can see on the right of the picture, Iā€™m right on the ocean so I wanted to avoid salt spray inside as much as I could. The cover held on really well, and was just as tight that afternoon as it was when I put it on in the morning (10 hours earlier).

I went to a couple of local OHV areas, just to see if they were open, and to get an idea of what the trails were like. I ended up on some trails that were a little out of my comfort zone considering I havenā€™t been off roading in several years. As soon as I got home, I immediately ordered a winch, all the associated recovery gear, as well as a portable air compressor. I went with the Warn Zeon 12S winch (comes with synthetic rope) and a Factor 55 ultra hook. I am very pleased with how it looks and how it sits in the bumper.

When I went out on one of my first trails, I had no intention of being out there for very long at all. However, I was misreading the map, and ended up losing daylight, having to finish the last couple of hours in the dark. And I mean stars out dark. First thing I did when I got home? Ordered exterior lighting. I initially thought I wanted a full size light bar across the top of the windshield, but Iā€™m not yet ready to drill, and I had some reservations about the wind noise I see everyone talk about. So instead, I decided to go with a @Baja Designs 10ā€ OnX6+ driving/combo LED light bar to start with, and if I need more light I can always add more later. I ended up mounting the brackets backwards compared to how the instructions say in order to get it to fit in front of the winch, but Iā€˜m happy with how it looks.

I drilled my first holes today. I added the Mopar tailgate table, and this thing rocks! It is absolutely solid, and does not vibrate on or off road. Looks super slick too. I also put the Mopar roof rails on top, just to see how they look and how tall they are. After a quick test drive, I noticed a slight, high-pitched whistle, but it was easily drowned out by the radio and normal road noise, so Iā€˜m not too worried about it. However, the rails make it too tall to fit in my garage, so I wonā€™t be keeping them on for daily driving anyways, so itā€™s not a huge deal for me.

How do you feel about the drive ability of the diesel
I just crossed 5000 miles, and so far it has been fantastic. My commute is about 20 miles each way, about half on highway half on two lane road, and it has no problem getting up to speed on the short on ramp I take. There is a steep grade on the highway near where I live, and I took it just to see how the diesel would handle it, and it did downshift (I think to 6th), but it had no problem maintaining the 65 MPH speed limit. It also does a fantastic job of engine braking, and it likes to stay at whatever speed youā€™re at in the gear itā€™s in. Going down the grade, in 8th gear, I got up to 70 after topping the hill at 65, and I never had to touch the brakes.

Iā€™ve taken a couple of ~500 mile trips on highway (through LA nonetheless, but COVID has significantly reduced traffic), and the ride is awesome; I havenā€™t had any steering issues yet-fingers crossed. Iā€™ve also been exploring some local OHV areas and some forestry trails, and the diesel has absolutely no problem so far. Given, I havenā€™t really taken it on any obstacles or trails Iā€™d rate harder than easy, but I can tell itā€™s going to be a beast. One thing I have noticed because of its absence is fan noise. Reading through the forums that seems to be a LOUD problem with other Jeep engines, but the diesel doesnā€™t have nearly as loud of a fan. You can certainly tell when it kicks on if youā€™re outside the vehicle, but itā€™s not overwhelming.

The sound of the diesel is certainly there, but you can really only hear it when stopped or just coming up to speed. Once on the road, the radio and road noise drown it out easily. But even when you do hear it, itā€™s not nearly as overwhelming as diesels used to be. I did have a guy pull up in his diesel truck to a restaurant curbside delivery a few spots down from me, and he thought he could hear mine, so he cut his off to be sure. Then he came over to talk about it lol... that tends to happen at the gas station as well, when people see the green hose going in.

Overall, the experience has been wonderful so far, and Iā€™m extremely pleased with it. Iā€™m glad I waited for it, and canā€™t wait to connect with some folks to do some proper trails.

Todayā€™s addition, or rather subtraction... AM/FM antenna delete! I never listen to AM/FM anyways, and now the fishing rod wonā€™t whip back and forth and all over when going through trees or brush. Also easier to clean the windshield at the gas station lol

A couple of small things today. Added the T-Rex chaser sticker on the windshield, as soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it lol. Another sticker is the max water level. I wasnā€™t super onboard with putting them on the doors, but thatā€™s where I initially was going to place them until I realized theyā€™d fit on the tailgate. Very pleased with it being a little more subtle. Lastly, I installed a front facing camera, which also means I now have the Tazer JL mini too!!! Took a quick drive to test some of the features, and itā€™s so cool. I particularly like the rear camera coming on with the blinker.

Have you used the cover in the rain yet?

@Brian0128 no, we get a decent amount of rain here in central cali, but Iā€™ve not used the cover in the rain yet. However, one of the days I used it, it was super windy and I was pretty concerned it was going to blow off or at least loosen. When I got out to the parking lot after my 10-hour workday, the cover was just as taut as it was when I put it on in the morning. As a result of that, Iā€™d have no qualms using it in the rain, I donā€™t think wind would even be able to blow it in.

Todayā€™s modification is one I probably wonā€™t use too much myself. Iā€™ve heard the back seat is not very comfortable because of how almost straight up and down the back is. So I installed the Innovative JK Products rear seat recline kit (it fits the JL despite being ā€œJK productsā€). I can definitely tell the difference sitting in it right now as Iā€™m posting this. Hopefully my future passengers appreciate it! I tried to take the pics in as close to the same position as possible (top is before, bottom is after)
