I have a 19 JLU Sport S with Manual 6 speed lifted 2" and on 35s. I believe the stock gears are 3.73. I use it as a daily driver and I have to tow a boat sometimes. The shop recommends 4.56, but I have read a lot of people saying to go with the 4.88. I would still like to be able to go down the highway in 6ft without my RPMs being too high. Any ideas?

Stock gears are 3.45.

I would go with the 4.56 personally. I'm going to in 3 years when the warranty is done. I remember in the JK days 35s were traditionally paired with 4.56 and 37s with 4.88. With the improved transmission with the JL I can't see how it wouldn't be the same. Performance will be a little better too compartively.

4.88 will give you more power in 6th gear

Also, better if you ever plan to go with 37's

My JL is getting 4.56s installed as I type. I have 33s now but will go to 35s this winter. I’ll let you know how it goes with both sizes. FWIW I drive 250 miles round trip once a week, so in addition to off road performance (I do that too) I’ll be interested in highway manners.

My first JK i did 4.88’s and regretted it till the day it was sold. Mid you it was only on 35’s and if I could do it again I would have done 4.10’s or 4.56’s. Also it was a 2010 and had the 3.8 sled motor, off road 1st gear was almost useless.

Has anyone tried the 4.88 on the manual trans? If you have, how does first feel?

Dont waste time with 456's. I'd do 4.88s or 5.13's. I have regeared before.

I have the same set up, sport/manual/2" lift/35's. Im running 4.56 gears, and am perfectly happy with it.

I would hardly call the 4.56 a waste of time, but to each their own.

That being said, I think most of these hardcore cats like @chevymitchell are running 4.88's or 5.13's

Thanks. Have you tried any towing with that set up? If so, how'd it do?

4.88's give you the room to add 37's in the future. Otherwise, 4.56 if you will be set on 35's

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I was at RIVER RUN (a mud park) and I had the opportunity to ride and drive a manual JL geared in 4.56 and 4.88. The 4.88 was a little tall for my taste. On town roads you can almost throw away 1st gear. The 4.56 was a little batter than stock on my 35s. There was a 4.56 JK there that was running on 37s. The owner told me he still has power in manual 6th.
