Joseph, when you say it doesn’t start, what does it do? Do you hear a single tick of the starter bendix kicking in, repeated ticks or is there zero noise? Does the dome light dim or go out, does it always start once warm or started once or are there any other observations you can share?

New batteries connected to a NoCo maintainer should be able to carry a nominal parasitic drain unless you’re parking with sodium quartz flood lights turned on and running your winch to mine coal.

I’m thinking it might be something simpler like your starter bendix. If it picks up crud, sometimes the bendix coil just doesn’t have enough strength to pull them in and close the contact plate in when it’s cold. Once the greasy crud warms, it behaves.
And it seems to work when the temperature is higher

I’m leaning your starter is not liking the onset of winter and the extra voltage you’re giving it when jumping is just enough to overcome a partially seized bendix.

It’s your call but I think I’d pop it off and bench test it. From your description, it sounds like a gummed up bendix plunger.

It’s a simple loose connection, id bet. 12.1 is plenty enough to start it, but the aux battery might just be a piece of junk you never know.

Remove and reinstall both batteries. Check voltage separately.

I may have missed where you did it, but first thing is to push all fuses down in the fuse box and check tightness of the hi voltage fuse posts at the end of the fuse block.

Seeing as you have power all the way to the dash does the dash dim, go blank or flicker when trying to start? That would indicate that the battery doesn't have enough juice or as previously mentioned you have a bad starter that's drawing it down on start attempts.

It could also be a bad clutch position sensor (the one inside the engine bay). If you have jscan, see if the sensor is reading the clutch being depressed. The sensor is reported in the radio frequency hub module.

Good luck, I have fought this battle for a while. For what it's worth I finally gave up on the aux battery, and I removed it entirely. I pulled fuse 42, pulled the hood switch to kill the start stop and taped off the leads from the aux battery and but in a 850cca main.

I don’t of this is relevant but I recently see the “2H” light flickers then turns off and I get a message “service 4WD”.

I did the same Wayne. Got tired of wondering if I’d be stranded by that %$&#@ little battery for a fifth time. Never looked back.

But for your mention on p.1 of changing the vehicle's batteries, these seemingly unrelated issues have all the hallmarks of a battery nearing the end of its practical service life. And perhaps the unresolved parasitic draw, if it is indeed occurring, is having an adverse effect on the health of the replacement batteries.

Keep us posted on the resolution process. 👍

Just came back home, it started. Took it in the garage and it won’t start. I’ve just added a video of the sound it makes.

Your battery voltage is insufficient or you have a bad ground. Check all cables and grounds. Charge batteries and load each separately. If one is bad, replace both; make they are fully charged.

That is the same sound mine made when the clutch sensor is not read.

I would definitely do some monitoring of the start sequence using JScan. That thing has saved me a few hours of troubleshooting because you can see exactly what is going on. It's an easy way to confirm if there's something else going on in the start circuit so you don't focus all your energy on the battery and it turns out to be something else.

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Maybe the starter power cable, or anything between it and the battery.

Also, make sure you remove all jewelery (rings, watches, etc) before you work on your power system. You could loose a finger or hand in a fraction of a second if you short a ring or watch. It's really ugly. Happened to a friend many years ago.

problem probably resolved.
this morning, it didn’t start. At some point I had my left foot outside and my whole body weight was on the clutch with the right foot, and boom.. it started.
got inside, pushed as usual on the clutch, didn’t start. Almost stood on the clutch and it started. Knowing that now, I’ve no more difficulty starting it.. will see again tomorrow morning.
clutch pedal switch ordered and will keep you informed once installed.
