i am currently doing a video and write up on the JL 8 speed service. Filter is replaceable without a new pan. I used mopar 8/9 speed ATF fluid. Also adding lubegard platinum. Should be up in next week or so.
When you have the pan off, take a look and let us know if there is enough clearance between the lowest point in the pan and the valve body to put one of these bulkhead fittings in, so next time when one changes the fluid, can drain it. I dont recall seeing any plug on the stamped steel pan.

Also if you dont spill any fluid when you lower the pan, and hopefully capture it all, can you measure and let us know how much drains out.

I have these B&M fittings in the steel pans on my 545RFE and 46RE on my WJ and Durango, makes it much easier to drain and dont get an ATF shampoo ;) when servicing.

On the JL the pan is stamped steel vs the composite used on other Jeeps/dodges

When you dropped the JL pan, does it have a replaceable filter or does one have to purchase another steel pan with the filter integrated into the pan?

I had scored a couple cases of the Mopar 8/9 spd ZF fluid for about 6$ a qt a few years back and used about 5 qts for my Grand Cherokee with Hemi. Picked up a mopar pan/filter for 100$ and had my pal at the dealer do the service, charge about 1 hr labor.

anyhow keep every one informed as to the results using the Amsoil ATL fluid. If that works with no issues I would think it would be a good option and probably a better fluid since it mostly PAO wheras the ZF fluid is only a semi-synthetic from what I have read on their data sheets.
Got about 20,000 miles with the Amsoil ATL, still shifts perfectly

I didn't service my transmissions on other vehicles I've owned. They all started showing transmission issues after 80~100k miles. Not making the same mistake with this JL.

My JL has been very reliable so far. I love it and I have put a bit of money into it and plan to do more. If I get to the point where transmission service is needed (50k miles) and the Jeep is still great, I will service it.

If I do end up selling it afterwards, no big deal, the next owner will have fresh transmission fluid.

Anyone have an idea how to get the drain plug out of a two door? Space is almost impossible…
