Hi All,

I have a JL Rubicon that I would like to regear to 5.13. The quotes I have received in my area seem high ($2600+tax plus $160 for 500 mile service) and wanted to get some perspective and recommendations of where to go near the Seattle metro area. I was expecting low $2k range.

Cheers

$2600 is really high.

Average should be around $900 for parts + $500-$800 for installation. Most places offer the 500 miles lube service for free.

$1400-$1600 is about right.

$1800-$2000+ is too high.

$1000 is too cheap.

I charge $700 in labor now ($400 Front Axle, $300 Rear Axle) and can usually get parts for $800-850.

I was charging $600 for both axles for over 10 years and recently went up.

The 500 miles service should be free or just the cost of the fluid + small mark-up.

The 500 miles service is free most of the time because it's not just swapping fluid. A shop should be taking the cover off to inspect the gear set to make sure everything is OK. If they're not doing this, then they're really overcharging for a simple drain and re-fill.

Exodus Jeep (I think they're in Texas so not much help to you) has a decent youtube video explaining the various gearing ratios and also walks through pricing - I think they also mentioned the $1,700 range for parts and labor.

Here is a good example of what a great gear change deal is: https://rebeloffroad.com/regearmyjeep/

Complimentary Lube Locker Gaskets (which really aren't needed since the JL gaskets are re-usable from the factory) and complimentary 500 mile service.

They also use Minor install kits.

Some shops will charge you for the full install kit and then not change any of the bearings on the carrier for non-Locker installations.

Rubicon installs require the removal of the smaller carrier bearing to get the ring off.

Either way, $2600 is too much. Doesn't seem very Jeeper like to do someone like that.

Yea, this is more of what I was expecting...I suppose we pay more for it here like everything else in this area. Hell, I could take a road trip down to rebeloffroad and still come out ahead.

Cheers

I've been quoted $2400 and $2500 by two different shops in the KC area for going to 4.56 gears and I thought that was quite high. So I've expanded my search to include a few shops in neighboring metropolitan areas to see if maybe it's just a local thing.

Have you checked NW Differential in Monroe? Dan has done a bunch of work on my Jeep and other vehicles, not sure what he charges but he stands by his work 100% and my experiences there have always been good.

Wow... could I pay you to do mine? ECGS up in Louisburg (they were in Brier Creek) quoted me in the $3K range and another shop in Willow Springs quoted me mid $2K too. I’m up in Brier Creek.

Absolutely. I wouldn't mind doing them. I've got a JK set coming the weekend of the 7th. Schedule should be pretty flexible after that. PM me.

might be dumb question but why a $200 upcharge? It has to be parts, Right?? the swap is the same on both, right?
