JL JLU Wrangler Weight, Tow Capacity, Max Payload Specs

Apologies if this has been addressed... but the Owners Manual shows tow capacity of 2dr at 2000lb (not 3500lb)

I special ordered a 2-door JL Sport the other day and I have driven one, so it's not like I was buying something that I hadn't seen before, but I noticed something yesterday while trying to calculate calculate whether it would fit in my garage with my motorcycle in front of it. I had thought that the 2-door JL was going to be somewhat compact and it would be easier to fit into those really small parallel parking spots. I guess I was still thinking that it wasn't that much different than the older Wranglers (e.g. CJs, YJs, and TJs). I had previously owned a 4-door XJ, so I figured I could look up the dimensions on it and compare it. Interestingly, it is basically the same size as my old XJ -- only 0.3" shorter. With only a 2000 lb towing capacity, I had assumed it was a lot shorter since short vehicles can get into a "tail wagging the dog" situation when they try to tow too much of a trailer. So, it's definitely not as compact as I was hoping. One other thing that I noticed is that it has quite a lower tow rating than my XJ. The XJ had a 5000 lb tow rating.

Anyone towing a boat with their JLU? Wondering what real world experience is towing 2500-3000 or so.

Maybe @JAY should update the original post to reflect the 2,000lb towing capacity of the 2-door models, especially since this thread is literally the top result in a Google search for "jl wrangler towing capacity"...

The 2 door shouldnt be much bigger then my TJ. I recall it being approx 12ft including 35 inch spare. I think the 4 door is 15 feet.

Which TJ? The 1996-1999 model was 151.2" long with a 93.4" wheelbase. The 2004-2006 SWB model was 154.9" long with a 93.4" wheelbase. The 2-door JL is 166.6" long with a 96.8" wheelbase and the 1994-1996 XJ was 166.9" long with a 101.4" wheelbase.

I'm thinking that the bumpers on the JL plus the rear tire mount on it is what makes it seem close to the size of the XJ.

Just look up the invoice prices on the vehicle and option that you are interested in and subtract 6%. There's plenty of dealerships that will do 5-6% below *invoice*, unless you are wanting to try to haggle even further below that, it's not worth it.

If there is a Carmax in your area, stop by there and get an offer on your TJ before you go to the Jeep dealership. My dealership really lowballed me on the possible trade-in of my Ram 1500, but since I had already gone to Carmax, I knew that the dealership was offering me half of what they offered. I ended up selling it to yet another company that offered $500 more than Carmax.

Good info! I have a price in mind I want to pay and it is low. I will walk away and probably should. I bought my 97 tj new and extremely well set up for off road, I wasnt going to trade it in. They wont likely want it anyway set up as extreme as it is. It only has 60k on the speedo. I have a pickup that I normally drive so the jeep is strictly pleasure.

Paying that much for a rig that will sit there much of the time isnt real efficient use of capital but if I get a deal I will do it. These things are NICE and I could see the family using it more, plus I will be retiring soon and plan a trip to Alaska with my son in about 3 years. The Ruby should be well set up by then.

Smarter money would be to wait 3 years when leases are up, pay a little less and pick up one of them. I could also give my TJ to my son as a graduation gift.

Newbie here. Can I ask how much spring sag is too much?

I have about 750 lbs of stock on my Sahara.
Front dipped about 1.25 inches
Rear dipped about .75 inches

I only have about 3.5 inches of travel left until i hit my bump stops.
Necessary to get better coils?

Look at your driver side door jam for the yellow payload sticker that is specific to your Jeep build

Are you referring to Tire and Loading Information sticker?
That seems to indicate 850lbs which I've heard folks mention they see on other models so I'm a bit confused. I have 4 dr rubicon 3.6 v6 with steel bumpers.
What does your sticker state?

850 is a long way from 1235. lol
