Thanks for this. I like to read info on both sides of the argument. I read arguments both ways for either a) getting a JK or b) waiting for JL.

I'm pretty sure I'm waiting for JL. Not sure I'll wait for the 2.0 turbo though. For me the Android Auto, backup camera and 8 speed auto are the features I'm looking for.

I test drove a JKU with a 4" lift and 35" tires on a 3.21 axle. It wasn't a good experience. From what I understand (at least with the 5 speed auto), your towing capacity with the 3.21 is only 2k and if you put bigger tires on your capacity essentially goes down to a bike rack.

I'm thinking now about a JLU Rubicon so I'll be starting with a 3.73 and an 8 speed. Here's my question... What would make me want to get 4.10 rario on a Rubicon?

Will I be able to tow 3.5k lbs on a 3.73 Rubicon on 35" tires?

Which will give me better mileage around town?
Which will give me better mileage on highway?
You don’t have a choice for gears they made it standard for the rubicon! No more debate!

Based on what?
Based on how they option them out now. Manual transmissions (w/ 4.10 gearing) are standard now on the JKR and more than likely on the JLR. If you choose an AT on the JKR now, it will revert you back to the 3.73 gearing and give you the option for $$$ to add the 4.10 back.

Based on speculation, the old norms don’t force the options on the new Wrangler.
JL Transmissions nor Engine options ar the same as the JK, so past actions do no dictate future options.

The logic behind the 4.10 / 3.73 assignment was on the old pre NAG1/Pentastar days, and on a now obsolete NSG370 manual transmission, so nothing applies, other than the Option sheet saying that 4.10 is standard for something, and the previous list we’ve seen has both options available for the Rubi.

However we still don’t know the limitations to those options.

This conflicts or doesn't make sense with previous posts saying Rubicon could have 3.73 or 4.10. So what does that mean for the 3.73?... That it's a free or $$$ downgrade from the Rubicon? It showed that the 3.73 wasn't even available on the sport or sahara
Wishful thinking, I am just praying it is standard since right now they aren’t allowing it to be ordered with an option. But at end of the day none of us really know.
I just know these are expensive vehicles so my hope is Jeep will make some of these previous options standard on the rubicon as the trend of vehicles ordered probably favors 4.10s. And if the plan on being able to allow consumers to fit 35” tires out the gate then it should be geared appropriately. Is that what they will do, Time will tell!

Does anyone have a comparison gear chart of the old 5spd in the JK vs the upcoming 8spd? Curious if the 8spd with 4.10s will be a similar overall ratio vs the 5spd with 4.56/4.88s... I know someone here is a math wizard and can figure this out lol. Math is not my strong suit, but would be nice if a JL with the 8spd and 4.10s could be able to run 37s without the need to regear or atleast be close to the old 5spd/4.56 ratio.

The ZF8 in other Dodge vehicles has a 4.71 1st gear ratio. The W5A580 that the current JK uses has a 3.59 1st gear ratio. So, 3.59x4.88=17.51 ratio. The ZF8 with just 3.73 is 4.71x3.73=17.56 ratio and with 4.10s is 4.71x4.10=19.31 ratio.

So, would you recommend changing the 4.10's out for 4.56 or something to run 37's?

I don't think you'll need to with the new 8spd trans. If the people running 37's with the JK 5spd auto used 4.88's and were fine, then the 1st gear ratio with the JL 8spd is about the same ratio with 3.73's and even better with the 4.10's.

JK 5spd auto 1st gear combined ratio with 4.88's is 17.51
JL 8spd auto 1st gear combined ratio with 3.73's is 17.56
JL 8spd auto 1st gear combined ratio with 4.10's is 19.31
