I can't help but wonder if they put a charge on the 4.10 gearing to steer people away from it for cafe reasons, while still offering it for the off-road crowd? That charge would be a deterrent to many, I would think.

They did it to pad the price and generate more profit. A couple of 4.10 vehicles won't affect the average. Most buyers don't even know the difference unless they have towed before or off road. The new Jeep buyers are more concerned with leather seats and infotainment.

Possibly, but I think they would be judge based on the best EPA test vehicles per engine, and transmission, not for every axle and tire combo.

So likely the CAFE numbers are calculated on # sold per 2dr + 4dr x 2L, 3L, 3.6L x AT + MT.

I doubt they get much more granular than that, but in the era of Big Data, perhaps they do go that in depth, but without EPA #s published I don’t know how they’d calculate it.

So they'll go to 0w20 and a redesign of the 3.6 to reduce friction, but they won't bother with gearing when it comes to cafe? I think it does matter and it counts. Sure there's a profit opportunity, but I think cafe drives it, the more I think about it.

Will a 4.10 axle ratio really matter that much if the 8th gear is rarely engaged anyways? With 8 gears, what does the 4.10 give you other than 10% more oomph right off the line?

Also, realistically how much worse MPG will you get with the 4.10? I can't imagine it being that much of a difference vs the 3.73 with 8 gears.

Again, how much mileage does 0w20 oil give you? It is a game of inches.

Plus the 4.10 is already standard in the less expensive Rubi 6MT. 4.10 should be a free option with the auto not an extra $700. Jeep takes away a standard feature then makes you pay for it after upgrading to an auto. Greedy Jeep!

I am planning on running 37's on my JL. I was all set to gear it with 5.13's based on the recommended math for that tire size, but now with the 8 speed transmission, I am considering backing it down to 4.88's. What do you guys think? I will be rock crawling and it will be my daily driver as well.

Unless the JL axles are a lot stronger than the JK you are going to need to beef up your axles and gusset or brace them to handle 37's to rock crawl. 4.88s would probably work best if you stick with it on the V6. Since the Hurricane is new it would be impossible to tell durability and drivability with 37s. It may be possible to only lift 3" or so with the new higher fender flares to clear 37s.

We're not talking about JK Rubicon. We're talking about JL Rubicon.

Didn't that upgrade option used to cost a lot less than $695? For some reason I remember configuring a 2016 Wrangler on the website and the option was like $150. Or am I misremembering?
The pricing changed in 2014. For 2013, it was $95 to upgrade to 3.73 on Sport models. The following year, they jacked it up to $695.

On other vehicles in the FCA lineup, you can still upgrade ratios for less than $100 bucks. Clearly they are trying to make a huge profit on that option for Jeeps.

My 07 Rubi with the dual top was $28k back then. Now it's in the $36k range.
The price of your Rubicon didn't go up as much as the value of your money went down.

From 28k to 36k averaged out over ten years is an increase of 2.545% per year. Inflation averaged over that same period was 1.702% per year (actually less than I expected). The inflation adjusted cost increase of your Rubicon over 10 years is 0.843% per year.
