Because I can get a 2017 JKU Sahara loaded for a great price, I was wondering if I can improve the ride of the JKU on the road to be more like a JLU?

Look at it this way... a JL still no luxury car but what's the ride quality difference between a luxury car and a JK? Depends on the road. On good roads, you'll hardly notice a difference.

If you deal with a lot of bad roads, invest in some softer shocks. Get a JKU and not a JK. Put a bit of weight on the rear (just as you'd do with any vehicle made to carry a bit of weight). You can also keep a set of HT wheels and swap them in when you're going to be only on the road.

Of course, you can even do these on a JL.
