Was going through some old photos and came across some pics of my 2013 JKU Freedom Edition. Thought it would be nice to compare the two and see if others who had or still have a JK post their pics to compare builds and any thoughts on what they changed or have changed.

For me, my JKU build consisted of the following:
- AEV 2.5” lift w/geo correction brackets
- Rugged Ridge wheels with 33” tires
- Warn Elite series bumpers front/rear
- Bestop Trextop NX
- Bestop soft doors
- Smittybilt X20 winch
- Kargo Master cage

JL build:
- Warn Zeon 10s winch
- Yakima cargo basket
- Factory Steel Bumpers

Thoughts about both builds:
Really liked the buildout of my JKU, but it became hard to live with it as a commuter. It was also a manual transmission, so that didn’t help things. When it was all done, all the work which was done by myself, turned the Jeep into a very personal build. It was hard to let it go.
For the JL I wanted to start out with the intention of keeping a mostly stock build with minor changes. I also opted for an auto so it would make a better daily driver. I keep resisting the urge to build it out...it’s hard to resist.

Hmmm. I really loved my 2 doors and miss the look. Here’s a couple of my white sport and black Rubi. I will have to say I like the looks of the 2 door JL’s better than my 4 door amd damn these new ones are light years ahead of the JK. Hell I even added a pic of my first 07 JKS Red. And of course the JL.

Has anyone with a JK tried the Fiberwerx JK to JL fenders and grille?
https://www.fiberwerx.com/collections/2007-2017-jeep-jk

I've only seen the one below (skip forward on the loud guy at the start of video):

I'd say even some JL owners wouldn't be able to tell from the outside it's a JK.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a JK back... never had as many issues with my JK like I have with the JL. Plus the JK is more repairable than the JL.

My JK build is pretty conservative but it has done well for me as both daily driver and on the trails. I did my best to keep the weight off since it has the 3.8. It's been a good, solid reliable powerplant but it doesn't have the power of the 3.6. I didn't want to lose much power or fuel economy because of my commute to work every day. I also wanted to keep stress of the drivetrain because I knew I'd keep it a LONG time. It is a 2008 now has 147k miles on it and is in excellent shape.

  • 2" AEV spacer lift
  • Rancho 5000X shocks (got them free from Rancho in Moab. Surprisingly good)
  • Evap canister skid
  • Engine oil pan skid (Rancho)
  • Engo winch on a Rough Country plate
  • CB
  • MXT400 GMRS
  • BFG KO2s, 33" take-offs from the JLUR.
  • Cowling spot lights, Inspired Engineering. Not great. Will replace with Rigids.
  • Truck Lite LED hedlights, which are outstanding.
Like I said, it was a mild build but I've never broken anything and its been off-roaded quite a lot over the years, to the point I wore out the sway bar disconnect and just replaced it. It's been to Moab and too many other places to remember them all and it has done very well. The skid plates have done their job, too!

With the JL, I went a bit bigger, as it was the same height and basic setup as the lifted JK, straight from the factory.

  • 2" Mopar lift. Love it.
  • BFG 35" KO2s
  • Rock Krawler spring correction pads for the front.
  • Rancho adjustable front track bar.
  • Rough Country adjustable rear track bar
  • Smittybilt XRC9500 winch
  • Rancho front diff glide plate
  • ARB rear diff cover
  • CB, GMRS
  • Magnaflow Exhaust--Turns out MUCH more durable off-road than stock. The tips have taken a beating but have not deformed. Stock would have been smashed 10x over.
  • Rigid Side Shooter cowling lights, flood (awesome! See deer and animals to the side that you'd otherwise never know were there!
  • Baja Designs LP6 lights. Simply the most amazing off-road lights I've seen or owned.
  • Tuffy console and tailgate safes.
  • Best mod of all--Snomaster 35 quart fridge! I'll never use a cooler again!
I've kept this thing lightweight to preserve performance and again, save stress on the drive train. She's been off road all over Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, WV, NC, TN, VA, CO, and Moab. We're doing Moab again in late March, too, just before the EJS.

No breaks, failures, or tears. Just a great Jeep that handles everything I've thrown at it. I got it almost 3 years ago to the day and have put 41k on it. Loved every minute of it. While the JL is superior in every way, I still love that old JK and drive it to work 3 to 4 days a week. My brother and I also just did the Appalachian Byway, so both Jeeps went. He loved the JK so much he immediately (day after the trip) traded in his Camaro ZL1 1LE on a Gladiator Rubi, LOL! So chalk a sale up to the old JK! She's still got it!

JL arrived at dealership early January 2018. Here it is next to the lifted JKUR. Same height. Both on 33's. (JK had pizza cutter KM2s on it).

Still love that old JK. Gonna drive it until the wheels fall off, or until I croak, whichever comes first.

Wish I had more pictures of the JK. She was a 2014 Sport S without LSD and had 3.21 gears. What I would do to see a video of driving through that blizzard in 2016 that left almost 30 inches of snow on the ground... I regretted the light bar pretty quickly. I don't offroad at night and looking back it just screams "ricer" relative to a Jeep Wrangler 🤣

This one takes me back. There weren’t many people on 37’s back when I first bought my 2012 Rubicon. The lift started out as Teraflex but ended up as a Frankenlift using parts from several manufacturers over time to get what I wanted. Ace sliders and rear bumper, JKS front bumper, winch, cb, etc etc. Was a great wheeling Jeep.

Now the wife has her ‘21 Rubi and we have some moderate plans for it. I got her winch installed along with some interior items she wanted. Ace sliders ordered, 35’s and wheels ordered and about to pull the trigger on a Rock Krawler lift.

Then: 2014 JK 2.5" Terflex lift on 35s (on the right, silver). Now: 2020 JL 3.5 Metalcloak on 38s. Can't wait to take this thing to Moab once the pandemic is over.
