I've had this happen now 5x and I was hopping it was just a fluke or maybe even user error but now I've reproduced it 5 times it's definitely an issue.

On occasion when I unlock the Jeep, put foot on the brake, and hit the push start it will just got to ACC and not start. With foot on brake I hit the button again it will go to RUN but won't start. If I exit the vehicle and lock the door and repeat the process it will never start. Only way to start it is with remote start.

From my troubleshooting I've found:

1.) It only does this after sitting overnight
2.) After I have this problem in the first time it never comes back the remainder of the day.
3.) It does it each time the brake pedal has no "play" in the press

What I mean by the above is I am always able to tell when it won't start because how the brake pedal feels. You know when you have a vehicle with power brakes and the vehicle is off and you pump the brakes a bunch of times and you lose the play in the pedal? That is exactly how the pedal feels when I enter the vehicle after it sitting overnight. The pedal has about 1/8" of play when pressing it to start it in the morning. It seems to be something with the brakes or a sensor in the brakes. I just can't figure out why the pedal feels this way after sitting all night.

So obviously this is the classic "we couldn't reproduce the issue" when I take it to the dealer so I will record a video and put it on YoutTube so I have something to show them. Fortunately, I have remote start but if I didn't have remote start this would be a MAJOR issue.

I have never experienced this, but try pumping the brake pedal hard before trying to start it. It sounds like a brake sensor to me might have a thermal problem or something.

Just a guess, but it sounds like the sensor in the seat isn't detecting that you are sitting there...it won't start if you aren't in the seat. Or, and now that I think about it, this is more likely, the sensor isn't detecting that the brake is pressed. What you are describing is what happens when you press the button with no brake depressed.

I have had this same issue. However, it doesn’t need to be overnight. This has happened after I parked for lunch and was only gone an hour. It is something with the brake. Today when it happens I pushed the brake as hard as I could and pushed the start button. Fired right up.

I noticed that on a test drive you have to push and hold the button. but that was with a manual. perhaps try that?

I'm glad others know what I'm talking about and I'll try both suggestions. Pushing the brake really hard may work. Holding it I don't think will work as I've sort of tried that. But I'll give it a try. I will probably be able to reproduce the issue as earlier as tomorrow morning.

I shouldn't have to hold the start button.

I had the issue happen again 2 more times. Both times in the morning going to work after the Jeep sat for about 14 hours overnight with temps in the 20's and everytime when the pedal loses all of it's play. As RonJames above mentioned, I found that if you push the pedal really hard it will start like normal.

So the issue appears that the sensor in the brake pedal indicating it's being pressed to start the vehicle isn't being detected when the pedal has the feel to it. So I'm now wondering why after the Jeep sits a bit does the brake have the feel like you would have when you are bleeding the lines after swapping the brakes? Once it fires up everything goes back to normal and all is well.

Sounds like the lack of power breaks when the engine is off could be causing difficulty depressing the break far enough to actually the safety switch?

That seems to be exactly it. What's weird is most of the time the brake feels normal. At least just pressing the pedal harder starts it but I can see it confusing some other people.

So you are saying the pedal is really stiff and has no play as if you pumped it several times?
