If I notice, I reflexively wave I.e. lift two fingers off the steering wheel for any Wrangler. Most people are deep in thought, on their cell phone, or generally clueless so I don’t expect waves back. In SoCal there are so many Jeeps it’s not uncommon to see 2-3 at or near an intersection so you could end up with Carpal Tunnel if you waved at every Wrangler.

I’m new to the Wrangler club (Last April). I would say most days it’s about 75% of the people that wave. I personally get caught up in music or talking and then get told by my passengers that I missed a wave and then feel guilty. Enter this product available on Amazon: The Lazy Waver. Now I will never have to feel bad again. Let the hilarity commence.

If I still lived in Chicago, I would have to cut one of those fingers off…

I have noticed down here in Florida that is more about the city you live in. We lived in Naples and then later moved up north to Port Charlotte (about 90 mi away)

In Naples they don't wave.

Port Charlotte they do.

As we drive around Florida I have noticed the more rural you go the more waves you get,

Have noticed the more Ducks they have the more they wave!

Back in Texas, you get a lot of waves unless you are in the big cities like Dallas, Houston etc. As you get further out of the cities they wave.
I suspect there may be a few Floridians left in Port Charlotte, and even a few more in Tallahassee. Naples? Like most of Florida these days, it’s basically Newark-New Jersey moved south. I wouldn’t expect any multi-finger waves there.

Speaking of etiquette, and depending on where you live, be sure to position the Lazy Waver in a palm-out position, facing oncoming traffic.

When seen in the opposite orientation, those two fingers mean something very different. ;)
Apparently, lazy-waving is a thing…

20yrs ago if you were driving a YJ or CJ there was a certain comrade in driving a death trap on wheels especially at highway speeds. The sense of a white knuckle adventure compelled you to wave. It was simply to acknowledge there was another manic on the road who knew the fear of hitting that pothole at 67mph.

Today we have back up cameras, proximity sensors and over head air bags. Don’t get me wrong I love my jeep and feel much more comfortable with my family in it. I still wave but I’m loosing my will to. Whats the purpose at waving at other safe Jeepers? Kind of like waving at the people who wear masks in the car…alone.

I'll wave at any Wrangler (or Gladiator), no matter how built or how stock it is, no matter how new or old it is, whether it's got a stupid angry grill, rubber ducks, flags or political stickers I may or may not agree with. Doesn't matter the trim level or whether it's a 4-door or 4xe. As long as I see you and can safely wave or put up 2 fingers, you're getting a damn wave.

It's a nice feeling when you get a wave, so I like to do that for others when I can. One day I tried waving at literally all Jeeps and yeah, that just doesn't work at all and they'll probably just look at you funny. So other than Wranglers (and a few JTs) I'll occasionally wave at the few old XJs that I see around. Saw one old Cherokee pickup (Comanche?) last year, completely stock and I sure as hell was waving at that neat thing. Would've waved at the weird GC Laredo I saw last week with big tires and 4" of poke, but we were both going the same way.

Also, I catch myself waving at night sometimes. Maybe it's just reflex or maybe I'm a bit psychotic, or maybe I'm just waving to your Jeep and not at you ?

☝ This.

Y2K, U.S. Hwy 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, every Jeep waved (simultaneously).

Today in So. Cal:
  • Light-to-mid modded and/or dirty CJ/YJ/TJ/JK/JL — highly probability of wave back—send it!
  • @3TV ’s overly-built jeeps and/or angry grills — no wave back ?‍♂
  • Gladiator — I’ll wave, but feel strangely conflicted inside once I see it’s really a JT
  • Woman in her 20s or 30s in a Sport/Sahara with color-matched hard top and fenders — don’t bother (she probably thinks she’s driving/deserves a G-Wagon) [Jeep Girl exception, see first point]
Like sales, it’s the number of doors you knock on. One wave back is usually all I need to make my day. ?

55-60 years ago it was impossible to hit a pothole over the max speed of 45 mph but you hung on with both hands to keep it between the lines. 45-50 years ago with mods allowing the ability to pull a trailer up the steepest grades over 70 mph the mods included a padded steering wheel for better grip, this also applies to the seat you were gripping, not with your hands. Besides— you couldn’t wave and make hand signals at the same time anyway.

Needs that "upward" motion for effect. Maybe some type of bobblehead-doll mechanism ?

I've evolved into a non-waver. I've been a Wrangler owner for over 20 years. It's not the "club" it used to be - too many Wranglers out there. I wouldn't sweat it.
Could'nt imagine going thru life avoiding someone's wave...that's ....lazy.

My sister in law lives in FL, near St augustine , she belongs to a local Jeep club and her dash is loaded with Ducks.
Here in southern NM, I never see any ducks and seldom get waves. Most jeeps here are mall crawlers, I do get waves from jeep owners that appear to be setup for some off roading.
Jeepers that are real with themselves that don't go offroad are smart to stay stock.
Othewise it's cosplay.
