Anybody waiting for the Defender expecting it to be a utility vehicle or have serious off road capability is going to be disappointed. There is simply not the market for it at the price point that Land Rover will have to pitch it at. Farmers have moved on, they buy Japanese pick ups because they take abuse and don’t break down. Plus they cost a LOT less. The UK market for off road capable vehicles is small.

The new defender will be seen doing the school run, at the shopping malls and be driven by urban hipsters.

IFS and a load of computer controlled ‘off road’ capabilities are what they expect and that’s what they’re going to get.

Recent Land Rover products have been over complicated and under developed and as a result unreliable. In the UK customers also have to deal with dreadful dealerships and arrogant Land Rover management who won’t even acknowledge well publicised common faults.

All this is why I bought my JLUR.

Nothing Land Rover sells in the US has a base price that low. The newest, largest, most iconic model they sell will not be that low, and I seriously doubt it will be utilitarian -- that hardly seems compatible with the conversion to fully independent airbag suspension and low hanging radiators in front of the wheels. The one they "just quit selling" stopped being imported to the US 20 years ago because it didn't meet safety regs anymore.

Unless when you say "30k" you're talking ounces of silver or something.

You just posted five models around or under 50k base. I didn't say this version would base at 30. I said the old one did and that this one will be under 50 but near it. Try reading

I was in Iceland last year and did a "jeep" tour with my daughter. Turns out it was a highly modified Defender 110 (think the year was 2013). Snorkel (we used it) and the auto tire inflator/deflators were just plain cool. Would make me sad to see the Defender turn into a mall crawler...

If it looks anything like this I would be totally interested. I love the 110s and the NAS 90 Defenders. The 90s have gotten stupid expensive in the last 5 years. The last one on BAT (soft top '97 with 31K miles) went for over $90K.

Have considered getting a low mileage LR4 but the MPGs are awful and it would be my wife's DD so need something more practical for her. Maybe when her '11 Pathfinder gives up the ghost we'll get a Bikini JLU.

Nope not kidding. All over the news that this is a leak by Lego. Articles are disappearing left and right. heres one:

This lego kit is supposed to come out in October. The defender is supposed to be announced in September.

The Lego kit has 4 wheel independent suspension, and other components known to be on the new defender. Sites are receiving takedown notices hosting the image.

Lego screwed up. But this is it.

I am a BIG fan of the 90s Defender. However, any Rubicon model Jeep is easily a more capable off-road vehicle.

Many think of the worldwide off-road vehicle as the Land Rover, but in reality it is the Toyota Land Cruiser.

In the end, however, Range Rover, Land Rover, Land Cruiser are simply "4"WD luxury vehicles in the USA. And you can outfit a Rubicon with similar accoutrements as well. But you can't buy any of those vehicles from the factory with Locking Differentials, or a removeable hardtop. Jeep Rubicon wins the day.

It is also worth noting, the Land Cruiser and the Defender (predecessor called the Series), are direct descendents from the Military Jeeps of WWII.

I've owned Range Rovers (terrible electronics), an FJ60 Land Cruiser (zero Complaints!), A CJ7 (rough ride on leaf springs), currently own a Land Cruiser UZJ100 (AC is weak; locks are going out), and expect delivery of a JL Rubicon in the coming Days.

If I can avoid the steering issues, I'll say it is the greatest vehicle I've owned, I believe.

Article on Autoblog this morning shows the interior of the prototypes, along with exterior shots of the 2- and 4-door.

If these are the final designs, the trucks seem to have extremely short rear overhangs which should make for impressive departure angles. Also a change to the bumper would increase approach angles.

Hopefully that last one is a “sahara” type model, and they have a more rugged version available as well.
