I think they'll have an upscale version, because it's Land Rover, and they'll have a stripped down version because they need it to be a volume seller in order to make the business case.

"Stripped down" and "volume seller" are kind of relative. This is a luxury SUV whose base price is probably >$100k. It's sales will probably never exceed 10% of Wrangler.

As for the defender, I do not understand why Land Rover is giving up this heroic long history with ease!!
I think the decision to change is very reckless.

You don't think there's a market for people who want an upscale interior with rugged capability? That's basically what a Sahara is.

There's definitely a market for this but with independent suspension this won't be a truly serious offroader. They are doubling down on the demographic currently buying Range Rovers, Evoques, Velars (people that don't go rock crawling but occasionally drive on unpaved roads/the beach)

To add for the confused people above the base price will be nowhere remotely close to 100k. I'll be very surprised if base is >50. The one that just quit selling was under 30 base. They'll make very upscale versions but this is Land Rover's utilitarian model. The leaked interior shots I've seen aren't looking like a range rover high end interior.

Nothing Land Rover sells in the US has a base price that low. The newest, largest, most iconic model they sell will not be that low, and I seriously doubt it will be utilitarian -- that hardly seems compatible with the conversion to fully independent airbag suspension and low hanging radiators in front of the wheels. The one they "just quit selling" stopped being imported to the US 20 years ago because it didn't meet safety regs anymore.

Unless when you say "30k" you're talking ounces of silver or something.
