Trying to troubleshoot through this:

Two weekends ago I was getting low voltage warning, telling me Aux Switches were not available. Jeep would not start- The cluster would light up, but when I press the clutch and the start button, it blips and would not start. So I disconnected the ESS Battey as shown in this video ; Negative terminal on the main battery disconnected, to the ESS battery, pulled fuse 42 and made sure system was off via Tazer. Fired right up, no check engine or warning lights, and drove away. No issues all week.

Last weekend, the Jeep was totally dead when I went to start it. Push in the clutch to roll forward and pop start and it worked fine. Went inside for about an hour or so, come out and as I start it it does the same thing: cuts out, dies, then comes back. Go to get gas 5 mins away, same thing. Voltmeter on the dash is reading 12-13v.

Had the main battery and alternator checked at NAPA, both reading good.

Coming home from a quick grocery trip store and the Jeep freaked out. All sorts of warning lights, the “stop safely vehicle will shut off soon” message, etc. as soon as I was half way up my driveway, it died. Checked the codes, BCM code U1514-87 which has been a constant for a bit now, but also 3 ABS codes: C212A-16, C2101-17, P212-A17. Nothing has changed, the Jeep was in the driveway all day while we worked on house stuff. My son did mention there is a crack in the passenger side tail light and I’ve read if water gets in there it can cause some issues. Used some canned air to try to blow the water out, and taped over the crack to try to keep water out.

No driving Monday. Tuesday, the Jeep freaked out multiple times on the way to work. (32 mi one way). Power fading out and then almost shutting down, no warnings beforehand, infotainment freezing, wipers coming on, typical freak out. This was on the highway as well. No discernable pattern- smooth cruising, stop and go traffic, brakes, no brakes, shifting, no shifting, body roll, no body roll. Nothing easily disceernable to motion of the Jeep or the road. Same error codes and warning lights as above: voltage, ABS, and when I got home "Stop safely vehicle will shut down soon." Parked the Jeep until I could examine it more.

Wednesday, I pulled the tail light, turned it upside down and emptied the water out, and then used more canned air to blow out whatever water i could. put it in the sun to dry out (hopefully). Went for a spin around the neighborhood without a tail light just to see what would happen- no issues, and no warnings- with no tail light connected. This was very curious as I thought there would at least be a "tail light out" warning.

After work, I pulled the ESS battery completely out and taped off the connections to eliminate the possibility of any sort of weird parasitic draw or shorting out on that end. Interestingly, When I put my wrench on the positive terminal it sparked once even with the negative terminal disconnected and separated- so I’m wondering if something was causing it to short out.

I'm going to leave the ESS battery out for now, and try to seal up the crack in the tail light, reinstall it and see how it goes.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there anything I'm missing? I've read several threads on here but they were older so I'm wondering if anyone has learned anything new since those.

I had some gremlins a couple months ago... There is a large harness behind the passenger fender liner, unplug and re-seat that connector. Then check the plugs on the green STAR connector in the glovebox. This resolved my issue.

Check the green star connector behind the glove box. When the canbus system looses communication you get all sorts of weird codes and gremlins happening randomly.

Sorry, forgot to include- Checked the green CANBUS behind the glovebox and made sure all the connections were seated. I saw the plug behind the passenger fender liner, it looked ok but I didn't push it to make sure it's snugly connected. I'll do that later today.

Cycle the lock on that large connector so the pins move out and then back in.

Quick update: It was the ESS Battery.

Sealed up the tail light, and drove around without the battery in the Jeep. No issues, but I did notice the voltage would dip below 14 when driving.

I talked to a friend who knows a little more about JL wiring than me. he's had to repair these jeeps on the trail while out west. He sent me some stuff, and after going through that I realized that the circuit was still open if you don't jumper 2 of the studs together. See here:
Removing the negative lead from the battery and pulling Fuse 42 is only half the process.

Considering I run a winch, and dual motor compressor off the big battery already, and the voltage was coming in below 14, I didn't want to chance anything and I wanted this bullshit Fixed. Went out, bought a new battery and installed it. That was 3 days ago. No issues so far.

This is pretty much what I guessed once I removed my tail light completely and had no warnings about a tail light being out. Once my contact sent me the video I linked, that made total sense.
