He wasn't a drill sgt, but rather a first sgt for his medical squadron. And he retired early 80s about the time I enlisted. I'll be the first to admit that AF basic training was easy, but you should see it now. /smh

R Lee Ermy was a badass mf'er and I would've hated to have him 'correcting my behavior'. Full Metal Jacket was probably toned down from how he really was!

We went to see Full Metal Jacket when it was first released. After, wife asked me if it was accurate. I told her the recruits had their bayonets on the wrong side. Other than that, the DIs were never that nice to us...and we slept in quonset huts.
