Ball Joints Replaced
I was getting more wiggle after replacing the springs and shocks, or at least I noticed it more. So I did the due diligence and checked all the bolts and joints for play. Balanced the tires and checked alignment again. All looked good. Still had more wiggle going over hard bumps that I didn't use to have.
To avoid damaging the SteerSmarts bits I paid good money for, I decided to swap out the primary suspect: the ball joints.
There was only a "bit" of play on the driver's side. They were not obviously destroyed from my perspective. But, I was at wits end to figure out what was causing the increasingly worse wiggling.
Teraflex HD Ball Joints were recommended to me by Tim @Tech Tim , so that is the direction I went.
After much effort to separate the knuckle from them, the passenger side BJ's were removed. They were both very easy to wiggle round as can be seen on most videos available on them. I didn't think they would be so loose but after 47k, mine were shot.
The driver's side were even worse. Completely shot.
Thank you to Roy @grimmjeeper for all the help and the right tools to do the job. The Teraflex joints have raised zerks tunnels that require a riser to avoid squishing them when pressing them into the axle.
Once replaced, the difference was dramatic. Super solid again with no wiggle and an even tighter steering feel. The highway drive back home that had the wheel shaking noticeably several times over very light bumps were now totally unfazed by even biggest pothole hits.
Extremely satisfied with the fix, and I can't recommend replacing the stock ball joints enough.
