It’s a twenty year old boat with a Gardner 2LW vintage engine. I don’t think I want a vintage boat but a more modern boat with a classic engine appeals to me. Here’s the same engine running in a different boat..

Almost sounded like a steam engine when it first started up.

I can find faults with it, the interior’s a bit dull and I don’t like the square windows....portholes are better for the aesthetics. Plus it’s only 53 feet long, a bit small for me.
I'm sure you'll find the right one before long!

A much nicer soundtrack than a modern 4 cylinder engine. A slow reving engine is much more suited to meandering down the canal.
Love the sound of "meandering". I'm excited for you. All the best as you "shop". Not sure what you do tho since there are no tires to kick.

Yeah I would think 4 cylinders would be overkill for meandering, lol.

To be sensible the boat gets craned out of the water and you get a professional survey done. That’s principally about the integrity of the steel hull. Overplating is common but costs around £250 per foot... so a seventy foot boat needing a complete overplate would cost £17500!

Yikes! I wouldn't want that for a surprise bill!

More questions. Who pays for all this inspection stuff? Or do you try to find one that has proof that an inspection has already been done by the seller? This is all very interesting I must say.

Welcome to the narrowboat thread! lol

If they spend a lot of time in a marina plugged in to ‘shore power’ they commonly suffer from galvanic corrosion. Most boats have 10mm steel under the water line but the pitting/corrosion can go straight through that. That’s why a survey is sensible.

The potential buyer pays for the crane, typically £250 and the survey, around £500. You don’t want to be doing them unless you really like the boat. Hopefully the survey only throws up some minor issues and the buyer negotiates the price down to cover them. If the boat is structurally unsound you probably walk away and lose the cost of the survey. That’s life.

understandable. I'd rather know that bill is coming than have it surprise me. As you've said, the inspection is well worth it.

I wouldn't say anything. otherwise you're gonna get blacklisted...
The issue here is, I have been conscripted to help them (her and her gf) find a volunteer to help them with an endeavor that they are trying to undertake. The picture in question being incentive for said volunteer.

Right track, but not quite. The gf has only ever seen one male in the flesh. Wants try something, and have Meghan (my friend) teach her how to do so properly.
