Have any of you bought the extended warranty?

Ordinarily, I wouldn't bother with it, but this jeep has just as many computers and bullshit in it as my 2012 X5 did. I really like my Jeep and dont want to get put over a barrel if I decide to keep it for a long time. I only have 17K on it and I'm coming up on 3 years next month.

I know its a GenPop question, but you are my GenPop.
We got them for the last few vehicles mainly due to all the electronic stuff and for peace of mind. Not sure we've broken even except on the one for the Suburban (it had... issues), so honestly not sure I would recommend it if you can fix most things yourself, including swapping out computer modules. The other things that made me nervous on the 392 were all the reports of axle and t-case issues, either of which would pay back the warranty cost.

I passed on the tire/wheel and windshield package, figuring it was not worth it for a wheel (too easy to buy eBay or aftermarket), and windshield coverage was cheaper through our car insurance. So, basic package, and like any insurance hating to pay but hoping we don't use it. Too soon to tell on our current vehicles, still on factory warranty except the GC and I am not driving much (so it's over 3 years but under 36k miles, oh well). The GC has been trouble-free (knock on wood) save a computer update or three, the Wagoneer has a bunch of SW/FW updates for various glitches and one battery failure, and the JLU has had a couple of updates and one leaky shock replaced.

We have gone with third-party and Mopar. We've had to fight sometimes with third-party warranties (not all shops accept them) so went with Mopar for my JLU, plus it was actually the cheapest option but still very expensive. I think it was about $3.5k for an 8-year, 75k mile warranty, and we paid (wife insisted) about $3k for a 5-year, 60k one for her Wagoneer (and then Jeep upped the Wagoneer warranty retroactively a few months later, natch). For a $100k vehicle it seemed not unreasonable, but I am waiting for them to say whatever breaks is due to my mods or some other silliness.

Not sure I would do it again, but some of the dealer quotes I got for typical repairs were astronomical (of course). If I did not have the warranty, I'd be ahead going aftermarket, and save money on the warranty, assuming there was aftermarket stuff to fit. The counter is the JLU has been out long enough to have most of the bugs out, we hope, and the cost of the warranty would require a couple of big problems to break even. Flip a coin.

My theory… pass on all extended warranties… cars, toasters, refrigerators, HF tools, etc. Save that money and pay for a repair/replacement if the time comes. They are making money on the warranties otherwise they wouldn’t be pushing them. Roll the dice. I bet a very small percentage actually recoup their payout. Yes, shit happens but you are paying for shit that might not happen.

I’m with @dragoneggs on the warranty issue - stay away from them in general. Plus, the stubborn in me kicks in as the dealer/seller keeps asking again and again… :swear:

Long day on the water, time to relax with a bottle of red. Did see a thing or two, though! (See below)

Rob, like Don I have bought extended warranties for our last two cars (and at 67 I've had many). Before these two I was not a big believer in an extended warranty and would have said they were a waste of money.

However about 3 years ago a friend of mine had his radio go out (aka infotainment center now since it's much more than a radio - a computer for all intents and purposes). This was on a GMC Canyon pick up truck so not some super high end vehicle. Vehicle was over the standard warranty period (36 months/36K miles I think) but he had an extended warranty.

He takes it to the dealer, they fix it, and tell him the bill is $4,000, to which he replies I have an extended warranty. Service says it's not covered under his extended warranty but he says hey I bought the Platinum Extended Warranty just for the reason it does cover electronics. Dealer checks, comes back tells him he's correct and "lucky" since the Platinum does cover it, they thought he just had the gold package extended warranty.

Anyway long story to say yes I now believe in extended warranties. I also recommend you check what they cover and make sure electronics are since, as Don mentioned, vehicles are now loaded with computers/electronics that are very expensive to replace.
