Hmmm - I don't really fall into any of those categories. Except once when it was bone stock, I've not been "off-roading". Really no place to do it within a few hundred miles (going through glorified mud pits doesn't count).

I've got quite a few mods on it, but they are all (mostly) centered around owning and towing a boat. Winch? That's for raising a 400lb lift to get stuff off the ground at the camp (also for pulling the boat trailer out of the yard if it has been raining).

Bigger tires, but not huge, because that would reduce WHP and towing manners.

Can we have another category for "guys that built their Jeeps for a purpose, but that purpose ain't offroading"?
Why not?— stock crowd, looks crowd, mild mods crowd, capabilities crowd, special purpose crowd

Can we be the "you do WHAT with that" crowd? I get that all the time, until I tell them it's a diesel and can tow up to 5500lbs (that's the rating in EU and Aus - there's a long thread in the towing section about it).

5500– how do they rate? interesting. Jeep’s early history included special purpose use— Dad got the 3A from a farmer in the late 50’s, purpose— tractor/ farm implement, high range like new.

So, short version is that all the manufacturers that sell trucks in the US got together and mutually decided on a certain standard for towing (SAE J2807). For detailed info on this, visit Motor Trend Explanation. But, what it boils down to is that there are some VERY rigorous tests, such as: have to stop-start on a 12% grade 5 times within 5 minutes (in both drive and reverse); have to drive up an 11.4 mile highway that rises 3000 feet in 100* heat with the AC on max cold and full blower.

There are a few others, but those are the toughest ones. And, those are the ones that I will NEVER encounter here in SE LA (steepest grade is a bridge, which is 4% grade for 0.5 miles). Also, they test on trailers WITHOUT brakes, whereas the EU/Aus have different ratings for braked trailers (how they get the 5500lbs rating).

In short, under the conditions that I will see (boat/trailer is 5000lbs, trailer has brakes, no steep grades, rarely hits 100%, etc.), the Jeep is certified to handle up to 5500lbs.

So here in Ca where the trailer brake requirement has been lowered from 4500 to 1500 lbs (as I recall) the testing doesn’t use brakes over 1500lbs , Yep, there keeping us SAFE again. Pet peeve, the 3A can no longer be legally towed without them (easily towed since the 50’s without brakes) — varies by state, one size fits all again ? Edit— if you’re not smart enough to turn the AC off if overheating pulling a grade or other common sense adjustments you shouldn’t be towing! ( have even turned the heater on high in the summer to finish a grade)

I have a 1984 Chevy C20 that was my grandfather's. It has either 384,000 or 484,000 miles on it. He literally used it to haul a long camper all over the country working oil fields. It has an 80's-era 350 (what, 150hp?? hahaha), 4spd, drum rear brakes, and that's about it. It's tow rating is around 5000lbs.

180 I think, gears and common sense work! I passed down Dad’s 3A a few years ago, moved it 70 miles to the in-laws (I supplied the Jeep, he did the fix up, brakes out, smaller things, for the grandkids heirloom) so nervous he brought his car trailer.

I want to be in group 3 but my wallet keeps holding me back that SOB. About to get another job (plan is all that money is for the Jeep ) but we shall see. Closest rock bigger that a foot is five hours away so my baby is a city slicker.

Love the wheels I thought about it for mine but I have the bright white and don't think it would look as nice.

I’d call ya a “2” -you’ve built a Jeep to work-original intent of the design. Heck they used to plow fields with them?
