Extremely easy. Technically not legal. However, as long as you keep the 3rd brake light you will be ok.

I am not an electric expert. How do I keep both this light and factory 3rd brake light? Do I need to cut the wires or is there any wire splicer I can use?

I had this on my prior JL for years. Great mod and never had a legal issue with it (and im at the PD every week). You’ll be fine. But as another poster said- you might want to shop around. I remember paying less than $50 for it.

No cutting. Please go to Amazon and find the plug and play unit. I installed on mine but sorry I can’t remember the model.

Use the money for something else-some states say no-some don't care until they pull you over, this is almost as useless as people who change the front grill, but I'm just talking out before coffee-your Jeep and it's an actual easy install with a little splicing to keep the brake light in tack. Keep the Jeep wave going.

In the very strict legal interpretation the ring is not DOT approved as a third brake light.

in reality, if you keep the stock 3rd brake Light and use a plug and play kit with a Y harness like the one option quadratec has then the likelihood that you get stopped for it depends on the “a-hole” quotient of your local police. If keep the 3rd brake light and install the ring and the ring only ever lights up when the brake pedal is pressed (so no flashing/strobing etc) then I seriously doubt any officer will pull you over unless you’re already breaking another traffic law.

As other posters have said look on Amazon. I got this one 2 years ago and it’s still going strong. Literally plug and play no splicing needed.
