Hi, team.
I am not a mechanic. Never spent much time under a vehicle before buying my JL.
I just shot this pic of my transmission.
Is that black crap a concern? Is my transmission leaking?
Thanks.

looks like gasket maker. Has any transmission service been done on the vehicle previously?
No, no service done yet. Well... shoot, maybe. I had my diffs serviced and I think my t-case and tranny, too. Kind of an, I've gone 6,000 miles and wheeled hard; let's make sure those fluids are okay. I'd have to check, but I think yes, the tranny probably has been serviced.
I guess gasket maker probably would not be a concern?

Silicone sealant should never be used on a transmission.

This doesn’t look like gasket maker, it’s wet. This also looks like the transfer case, not transmission. Appears to be just a mess from something wiping up against it.

Melted plastic bag maybe? You can use silicone sealant with aluminum, just make sure you get the type specified for it. Iff you get the wrong type it can cause a lot of issues.
