The first time I had to change a flat, I left it off, didn't want to be bothered with it.

It serves as a cheap ass lock to make you keep the Jeep tool kit in the Jeep with the effing torx bit. Was getting tires put on last month and replaced all 5 but forgot about the cheap ass lock AND my tool kit was at home. Had to walk over to Menards to buy a torx set so they can replace the spare.
If you ever find yourself in that situation again, (more for others at this point, I doubt you’ll be there again) you can use a flat head in a pinch

Anything that will fit inside there will turn that lock. Its not like an actual screw so does not need any real torque to turn it. Ive used a screwdriver and the corner of my key before.
Tried to turn it first with whatever I could find on hand but still had to go buy tools that day. Even with the socket mine was stiff to turn. Oh well now I have a new set of torx bits. It was $5 for the size I needed r $15 for a set of 7. I went for the set

Oh damn I HAD to buy tools ??

You can turn that lock open with anything really. I've done it with a flathead before.

Doug, I usually just use a pocket knife to lock and unlock it. Anything you can wedge into the torx fitting will turn it easily.

I switched from steel wheels to alloy, and now the backup camera bezel doesn't fit. I can buy a replacement for 20 bucks, but I don't understand the purpose of the bezel in the first place, other than to be a minor annoyance when changing tires?

Maybe a stupid question, but is there a reason to put one back on?
It's Mopar adding an inexpensive lock for your spare tire.

The casting acts as protection for the camera. Sun, rain, dirt, without it.
I made a plastic shield for mine, on the set of alloys for my Sport. Easy to do, and well worth the effort.

You just need to relocate the camera. It was quite the job, but worked out.

What did you use for the mount?
How does the view compare to the factory location?

I don't even have the plastic surround that covers it when I replaced my tire carrier with the EVO unit. It's all out there, wires and all, and hasn't given my any issues,

Thank you. The mount was through quadratec and the view is similar to factory; I tried to maintain the same camera mounting angle.

... The camera housing gets dinged up as you take the spare on and off. I seem to nick the camera every time I put the wheel back on.
Buy a short piece of 2" diameter schedule 40 PVC. For OEM equipment cut off a piece about 3.25" long. After removing the camera bezel slide the PVC over the post ... now the camera is fully protected.

Picture shows it installed on a TeraFlex tire carrier with the tire in place.

I'd go with ABS for the black color.
