Just wear and tear due to friction and heat. I recommend avoiding it.

I believe 29mph is the maximum recommended speed in low range.

I like a manual on hills that you don't make and have to back down

It will be ok most of the time, but after adding weight and tires you may find yourself stalling more. When I started towing a little trailer off-road was when I said no more manual.

With the 8sp, it shouldn't be too bad, stay in 4lo
The OP was asking about the manual transmission and that is what we have. I have no intention of ever owning an automatic anything as long as there is a manual option.

Is there a problem driving in 5th or 6th in low?
As @Billy mentioned and then @Dirt32 clarified a bit... The only issue is heat and wear. In higher transmission gears the the output side of the transfer case is spinning pretty quickly (you can hear it whine). This of course is assuming you changed gears to go faster and are not at idle.

I believe 29mph is the maximum recommended speed in low range.
LOL, in 5th gear (4LO) and just a tick over 2k RPMs we are going 10 MPH. Now, a 3.21 geared JK/JKU with a standard T-case (2.72) would be going over 20MPH at ~2k RPM.

It will be ok most of the time, but after adding weight and tires you may find yourself stalling more. When I started towing a little trailer off-road was when I said no more manual.
This hasn't been an issue for us at all, but I build our overland trailer pretty light. Like I said earlier, gearing is key to off roading a manual. Another advantage though is more mass in the flywheel. IMO the JK/JKU could have used a little heavier flywheel, luckily aftermarket clutches are out now that do this. Out factory clutch is still kicking it, but when the time goes this will be a big factor in the replacement we use.

Yeah, I don't think I've even been 20mph in low range in my JK. Maybe 10 or 15, tops. Good to know the max recommended, though.
