First of all, be glad for your friend. His Jeep looks great. It's not a F*cking competition.
Yes the Rubicon is higher than a Sport. But that is because of the springs. Lifts made for all trims basically are designed for the Rubicon. So with the new springs the Sport should be 2 inches taller than a Rubicon - not than a Sport! And remember Jeep uses different springs based on the vehicle options. Your friend had a Sport with a soft top. Those are the shortest springs they make. The lift kits err on the heavy side because they assume you have a Rubicon and you are going to weigh it down with steel bumpers, sliders, winch, etc. And weight is not just mods - the Rubicon weighs more than the Sport to start with. So it is springs and weight.
It should not be surprising at all.
