Is it worth carrying a chain now that synthetic straps and shackles rule?

Could you have used a tow strap wrapped around the crossmember and attached a snatch strap to that?

Yeah, I guess a tow strap could have worked as well. A chain is nice where there are sharp pieces that could cut a strap though

I don’t go places where I can get in too much trouble in my Rubicon (no body damage allowed) so I have an ARB recovery kit with a kinetic strap and a few soft shackles, couple of D-shackles, gloves. I‘ve used a couple items in this kit, but never on a vehicle, its been tractors and farm equipment, lol.

My F-250 has a couple of hitches (our trailers use two different sizes), a 5’ steel pry bar, and a 10-12’ logging chain In the bed. I’ve used that chain FAR more than I ever will the soft stuff. Partly because I’ve had one for probably 25 years, partly because on the farm I may be pulling out a tractor from the mud, pulling down a “widow maker” tree, pulling out old fence posts, you name it. I call my chain the “honey badger.” It just doesn’t care.

I also always carry a small shovel, boy’s axe, Silky hand saw, tire repair kit and compressor. Every one of those has been used multiple times in both Jeeping and farming.

That is just my very limited and narrowly focused use and needs. If I were trying to emulate Matt’s Off-road Recovery, I probably wouldn’t carry the chain. And full disclosure, my JLUR is indeed yellow, lol!

That thing is for tying down vehicles with straps to flatbeds, not recovery.
