After removing the stock rear bumper ( there was way more plastic than steel) and installing an aftermarket unit, there's a noticeable bit of bodywork edge just hanging out in the open now. I've sprayed some rustproofing oil into the gap, but would like to find a way to cover it up for aesthetic reasons. Was thinking maybe a section of u-channel weatherstripping, but not sure if that would work. Anyone have any ideas?

You can pick up matte black outdoor vinyl from a local sign supply shop. My wife keeps some on hand for her Cricut hobby. I am going to use some to cover up the spot you mentioned between the fender and the bumper. It stands out pretty bad on white JLs.

I actually cut some of that off (for 37 up-travel), then used some JB weld to fill it, then sand, then color-matched it. Turned out pretty good. I dont have a pic handy (sorry), but i know i have it in my build thread somewhere.

Do no put acid adhesion silicone caulking on aluminim. It will corrode it. Make sure that it’s neutral adhesion.

You're not alone. When I was looking for an aftermarket rear bumper I knew I would not like this area with a shorty bumper. So I got a full width bumper from LOD that covers it pretty well.

I'm not cutting off this area and putting cheap crap in to fill a hole I made. In my opinion it should be done correctly and welded closed. Yes I know Jeeps come with seam sealer, but it's not filling a gaping hole that's being blasted by rain water and mud.

If you are not into cutting factory body panels you could hide this pretty successfully with a can of black undercoating. It is pretty amazing how black blends with the other under body parts then is not noticed. Check the body pinch seam (behind the skid rail) it was very noticeable until undercoated.
