Sold my Road Glide last year. Liked a lot about it, but hated it on anything but a smooth road. The bikes before it were a Suzuki VStrom 1000 and a BMW R1200GS. I really prefer the adventure type of bike due to the soft ride, height and they handle surprisingly well.

Thinking of going back to a BMW, maybe a 1250 GS or GSA this time. Also considering a KTM or a Triumph.

Anyone out there have any of these bikes?

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I started riding motorcycles at the age of four. I have had many motorcycles. I wanted to like the adventure bikes, but just could not. I hated the flat boring power curve. It always felt like they were a lazy throttled bike that was full of compromise. Not a great on road bike, not a great off road bike just a balance of ho hum.

My last bike was a Concours 14, I put approx 85,000 miles on it, did many 1000+ mile days on it, rode the 10 best motorcycle roads in the US and rode in all the lower 48 states on that bike. You can really stack the miles up on that bike and it is super smooth and powerful. Pull the butterflies out of the throttle bodies, add a tuner and pipe, and you can be around the 165 hp range.

The fact that it will pull wheelies with just throttle at 60 mph in 2nd gear was just a bonus. Mind you it is no Zx-10, but it does have the same motor as the zx-14 just detuned some to be manageable for touring. Plus the resale is low on them so they can be had for a very good price used.

I understand......Been riding bikes for 53 years! Just bought a 20 year old Sportster project that had less than 5000 miles. It's not surprising most Jeep people can relate to the feeling you get on a bike.

Those Super Teneres are hard to find. No dealers have any in stock and they are a rare find used. The last couple used ones I’ e found had a strange opaque fuel tank and blue anodized wheel rims. Didn't care for that look. People that have them must like them. I need to check the local Yamaha dealer.

Used to travel on and off-road on the v-strom 650. Had a blast seeing a lot of places and camping on that bike. If I were to look at another bike I'd be looking at an ST (as wibornz mentions above) or a KTM 1290. A friend has the 1290 and loves it. A lot depends on how you intend to use it, I suppose.

I have owned both the R1200 GS and the R1200 GSA. Along with the RT's, GT's, and an older LT. Both the GS and GSA are great bikes and provide an excellent ride both on and off pavement. They are heavier than the other bikes mentioned for sure, but they are controllable. They remind me of Jeeps because of the plentiful after market options available. Either one will provide you an enjoyable riding experience.

I ride a Super Tenere.
50,000 happy miles on it.

+1 here!! The KTM and GS have a high cost of ownership and are needy. Don't get me wrong they are very nice bikes. I like simple and reliable. With a set of Anakee Wilds my Super Tenere gets the job done with zero drama. It also can peel off miles like no other bike. Some may call it "boring". I like boring!! Low maintenance, easy to work on and 25K valve adjustment intervals.

And if you are a pro level rider the KTM 1290R is a rocket ship!! I was in Mojave National preserve on my Beta blazing through some rollers at about 45 mph or so. I was passed by a 1290 doing close to 100mph using the rollers for whoops. If you are that kind of rider then KTM all the way!! Just plan on roasting your nuts with that V-twin under you. It is an uncomfortable and very hot running machine for long distance. It is a pure performance machine with close to 150 RWHP.

The BMW GS is the gold standard of adventure bikes. If you plan on selling it around 60k miles then it's an outstanding choice. If you plan on keeping it then not so much. Very expensive parts and repairs.

The Triumph I cannot comment on since the only ones I have ridden were my dads old Trident with right side shift lever and left side brake. I have heard the triple is an amazing engine though. Parts are in line with Yamahas as well.

And yes I know the Spot should be mounted to my body. I had it mounted for check ins and was riding on populated forestry roads.

The closest that I did to an adventure bike was the Versys 650 set up to tour. It was a fun bike and would corner hard and deep. it was ugly as fuck, but it had a twin that gave it good low end torque. It was surprisingly agile and quick to about 100 mph then would climb to about 125 or so. It was all day comfy.

Did sport a KLR 650 but again. Not a great road bike not a great off road bike.

Now you got me started Ted!! I had a Ninja 650R for my cross country machine for over 7 years!! Super duper reliable and virtually wrench free!! On one 5500 mile Western states ride I had to pull out my tools only 1 time!! It was to adjust a brand new chain I installed before the trip.

I love Kawasaki!! And that 1400 Concours is soooo nice. I almost got that bike. I had to be honest with myself and decided it was too much machine for me.

I have had more Kawasaki bikes than any other brand. KZ550, KZ750, KX65, KX100, KFX700 quad, and my Ninja 650R.

In 1984 Kawasaki changed the motorcycling world. My buddy in the Navy just purchased a brand new Ninja 900. In 4th gear at over 100mph he said it felt like you could put the kickstand down. It was that smooth.

I had a Ninja 650 for many years... 2006 to 2014. That parallel twin is a fine engine. I still own my KLR650 (685 now).

I had a Ninja 650 also.... Well not me, my youngest son. We did a 30 day 8,000 mile trip around the US after he graduated from High School. We did just over 1200 miles the first day. It dam near killed him.

You know your kid is riding hard when he looks like this at 9 am. We did a 17 hour day then pulled over and slept on the black top at a pull off along the side of the road. Got up at 4 am rode into the Sequoia National Forest, saw the General Sherman Tree and rode back out of the park. We stopped for breakfast and I snapped this picture of him. Check his eyes out. I let him sleep in the booth for an hour, then we rode to Hot Springs Ca, over General Sherman's Pass, across Death Valley and into Las Vegas at 10 PM. It was another long day.

I have had a lot of Motorcycles.

I had a zx 10 ninja, my wife took that over, but she blew the motor up in it. Then I bought her a 1250 Bandit S and set it up for traveling. This is one of my favorite pics from me and her riding and camping together up in Canada.

Since my Triumph Daytona will be my dedicated Track/Race Bike, I’m also wishing I had a dedicated Street Bike on the side. Here’s me and my Daytona (in Street Fairings) at New York Safety Track.

I’m on the fence wanting either a Street Triple or a Supermoto (like a DRZ400SM, that could also be Track worthy).
