How to mount a surfboard on JLU with top off

This was an issue I was unreasonably anxious about prior to buying my Jeep today. I’ve seen other mount their board with towels or pool noodles with the longboard tail behind the windshield, and I wasn’t really super stoked because that position risks some bigger boards slipping out the back. What I needed was a way to securely mount the board higher than the windshield.

I used Riverside universal roof kayak blocks from REI ($35) and FCS D-ring 13 foot surf straps from almost any surf shop or online ($25). I was originally going to use foam yoga blocks but they don’t have enough give. The Riverside blocks have just the right amount of give and the channel on the bottom will mush just right to sit over the Sirius and gps antennas. They also have grippy bottoms and the concave top has the right give to snuggly grip the board. For the straps, I strongly recommend the D rings and not the cam version because the cams could come loose at higher speeds.

This setup is extremely secure and only takes about 2 minutes to put up and less than a minute to take down. Pics below:
