I have no idea if OP will make it this far, but most techniques have been covered. One thing I haven't seen addressed are tired.... most off-road tires are horrible for snow and ice, and I mean HORRIBLE. The rubber gets too hard near zero, and it doesnt have enough and proper sipes. Something like the duratracs are good int he snow and ice, but something like the milestar patagonias are not. before trying to tackle snow and ice as a rookie, check your tires. Hell, do yourself a favor, go to a parking lot with a little snow and ice, and test it out.

Tires not designed for ice and snow range from iffy - life threatening in a hurry.
I’m rolling NTGs, I was actually a little worried about them. Not ideal for sure

dear southern friend,

I would highly recommend that you stay away from Junior and do not under any circumstances pick up any hitchhiking brides.

now that that is out of the way.

It’s important to realize that your difficulty in traveling in snow will most definitely be impacted by other folk that decide that they need to venture out as well. Slick roads + people that are not used to driving in those conditions = _________

Basically anyone can fill in that blank.

Good luck!!!!!
@Stormin’ Moorman don't listen to this advice. If there is a bride on the side of the road, by all means pick her up. If you already have a wife, you need to break the bad news gently. There is one caveat, if the bride on the side of the road looks like Fred .... do not stop. Remember that other great Jerry Reed song when in doubt.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with NTG's, but your jeep is more capable then 99% of vehicles out there, the poor tires will bring down its capabilities a bit, but it can be driven safely.... Drive like your grandmother would, and you'll be fine.

Brake early and gradually
leave extra room
accelerate slowly
slow down before corners and coast around them

If you act like there is an egg between your foot and the gas and brake pedal, you'll get the gist and you'll be safe.

I appreciate everyone’s advice and I’ll be thinking about what everyone said as I head to Texas. Hopefully everything will be melted by the time I get there. I’ll take some pics along the way for those of you emotionally invested in this modern day “Odyssey”.

You drive a Jeep Wrangler, but in the snow, you have to act like its a VW beetle with bare tires. Just drive slow and be aware of your surroundings.

do like my mom when she totaled my dads 1970 dodge he told her to slow down when going over bridges she thought that ment slowing down from 75-55. he meant from 55 to about 35 because the bridges ice over she is from southern california the only snow she had seen was on TV. and Texas is nothing for snow grow a pair and just drive its not that bad if you stay under 55MPH and in 4WD.

I will be leaving tomorrow for a trip to North Alabama for a day or two, then into the great frozen tundra that is East Texas. As a Southerner, i don't have a lot of experience driving in snow and ice...although i have watched three seasons of Ice Road Truckers. Is there any advice from the Yankee contingent of the forum as to the Do's and Don'ts of driving in these conditions? And I can't stay home, it's a work trip and I'm OGAF.

Here's a picture of me for reference.

You might want to take off that hat and fake mustache, and tell Burt Reynolds family you are sorry.....

Take it easy....take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can...don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
And take it easy

A case designed to transfer goods to the local grocery store.
Oh! I’ve got one of those in the garage. I’ll engage it as soon as I get home. Thanks!

Some would say I’m a.....Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate.
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you

But i need to bring a load of Coors back to GA!
Hey- I come down to Georgia all the time and can get Coors in North Carolina. First thing I looked for when I moved here from Colorado was the suds of sir banquet. Original style, not that watered down Rocky Mountain goat piss in the silver can lol!

Well... I'd have had different advice if you were headed to Winslow, Arizona (such a fine site to see).
