7) release parking brake
8) Reverse or first gear

I'll bet the reason is a solid one beyond my "pay grade," but why doesn't cruise control "on/off" remember "state" between startups? This appears to be the case across many vehicles.

Please in no way confuse this question with cruise control engaged.

That is a FANTASTIC question.

Anyone else here into DCS World? That's for the F/A-18C, but just got the new F-14B to learn. The RIO/Jester assisted startup is a dream come true for anyone that likes checklists (Jester: "Erect standby attitude indicator gyro... giggity!").

Jeep...

Close door
Parking lights on (if required) and adjust gauge brightness as desired
Seat belt on
Check wipers off
Start engine
Front and Rear defrost (if required), otherwise leave in auto
Headlights on (if required)
Apply service brake
Parking brake off
Place transmission is required gear range

Get in, buckle up, start engine, plug in phone, back out of garage, head out.

If it's warm out, include "remove freedom panels/drop soft top" and "roll down windows" before getting in.

For comparison, these are my steps for my wife's Prius:

1. Open door
2. Get in
3. Notice how much I dislike the seat and pretty much everything else
4. Slam my left foot into the floor
5. Slam it down again
6. Try to remember how to start a car that doesn't have a clutch
7. Push start. Wonder why engine doesn't start
8. Try to disengage nonexistent hand brake
9. Find reverse
10. Remove foot from brake and momentarily freak out when car starts moving even though engine is off
11. Nearly drive off the road due to steering that responds immediately when I turn the wheel
