When ESS stops working you have 2-3 months before important things stop working and you could be stranded. If your batteries are 2018 OEM they're well beyond their expected lifespan. It wouldn't hurt to just replace them.

Always replace Main & Aux at the same time. If you only replace one at a time you will go through a lot more batteries than you should and will have chronic battery issues.

When you go to start your Jeep and instead of turning over, the dash lights up like a Christmas tree and you start pounding the steering wheel in anger. Yeah, that…
?
Thank you for responding.

You’ll start getting strange dash codes, when mine was on the way out, I got the “auxiliary switches temporarily unavailable “ I ditched the aux battery, I have never used the ESS from day one, it’s disabled with Tazer……

Yes, same battery across all JL years.
But not model/features. 4XE & ETorque Jeeps do not have the Aux battery, the battery for those features takes over the Aux battery functions.

Main = Group Size 48
Aux = Group Size 400
Both AGM

Idk, but if you disable the start stop thing it lasts a lot longer. Idk what the fuel economy impact is but whatever it’s a good trade for not dealing with that weird little battery

I just replaced mine on my 18.
did it from the top as I didn’t want to fool with body clips and fenders.
it wasn’t hard, a bit aggravating with the fuse box connectors flipping in the way.

just remember even with the main battery disconnected the leads are still energized from the aux battery.

Don’t do this.
Do it through the fender. You will break some of the plastic clips, but there are 3 (if I remember) bolts that hold the fender on. It's so much easier and quicker.

What engine to you have? I have an 18 JL with the 2.0 with the etorque . It does not have an Aux battery, just an empty case. If the ESS isn't working it's a sign you main battery is weak and needs replacing.

[/QUOTE From everything I here replace both at the same time. The bad battery will deplete the good one
