New cars get inspected, pre-delivery inspections, dealer prep, washed and detailed. Cars that sit unsold on the lots get additional maintenence if needed. Stuff like battery charging.Bottom line, there is a massive mark up on vehicles, from the actual build cost to the MSRP.
If If you order a spec Jeep, there is literally 2 hours of work for the dealership to deliver the vehicle.
you buy off the lot, there is a significant carrying cost for that inventory.
It seems like it would cost you more to order exactly what you want, but that is just not the case.
Cars in inventory for more then 90 days accrue interest from floor plan.
Ordered cars get picked up right away. There is no risk of the vehicle carrying floor plan after 90 days. I believe the dealer also has something like 90 days to pay for the vehicle. 90 days to pay for it even though they sold it right when it arrived at the dealer. That's like a 0% loan for 90 days. The control and use of that money is huge.
