I got an email solicitation recently from a MOPAR vendor making this claim for the JL, of course with the end goal of selling me a Hood Deflector.

Something tells me this hasn't exactly been studied in some wind tunnel with highly controlled size debris, fired at different speeds and angles of attack, but rather is an anecdotal claim at best, assuming that such correlation even exists.

What say you? Are Hood Deflectors not much more than protection for the (front of the) hood if that, or have some of you in the 3+ windshield replacement club (a club for which, regrettably, membership attaches to me) found there to be correlation between this product's installation and better windshield outcomes?

My second windshield cracked sitting in my driveway....not much I suspect a hood deflector would have done to prevent that.

Thanks.

Think the very slight shift upward in airflow caused by a deflector may help reduce the number of bugs splattering on the windshield, but it’s not going to prevent rocks or road debris from having their way with your glass. Makes people feel better, and some like the look, but it doesn’t add much protection.

I've had the AVS Aeroskin II (P/N 436148) installed on my Jeep for almost a year now. I installed it to protect the leading edge of my hood from stone chips more than for deflecting stuff over the windshield. If it does deflect anything over the windshield, that's a bonus.

Both my 2009 and 2012 JK's had a lot a stone chips on the front edge of the hood so this was fairly cheap protection against that.

Word of advice, don’t get one of these if you have a softtop! Put one of these on my wife’s Jeep and turned a perfectly good Besttop Sunrider into a flappy mess.

Greg: Please explain the cause and effect you describe. Did it adversely effect the soft top or Bestop Sunrider when in the closed or open position, and how?

Have had the Sunrider for hardtop on my wife’s Jeep for over a year with zero issues, quite on the highway in the closed position. Added a hood protector exactly the same as @BadAssBumbleBee and next time up to highway speeds the top was a flappy mess. Took it off her Jeep and put it on the Gladiator and it was perfect, no more flapping.

Maybe that means these really do help deflect wind over the windshield?

That might not be a good thing for soft top owners, but I've got the hard top and plan to leave mine on for now.

I’m on my second JL rubicon with one of these. Love it.

I didn’t think that little lip would make that much difference, but wow, did it!

I've got the same one, and as we're still in the middle of winter, can't speak for bugs, but it is my experience that it does NOT work for the larger rocks/sand that get put down during a snowfall...ask me how I found this out last saturday

Came here for the opinions on the Aeroskin II and had to comment on your Jeep! Wow! Nice work with the polish

I got one not long ago. I don't expect it to help with rocks, but I am hoping it does with bugs. My windshield was getting filled with bug guts and outdoor temps hadn't even been over 50 for more than a day.

Also, I have a soft top and have not noticed any difference in noise or flapping. Well, except for those days with 40 mph winds and 60 mph gusts, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the Aeroskin II.

I had a Mopar deflector on the JK and it seemed to decrease the amount of insect deaths, so I opted for the Mopar deflector on the JL.

I agree it may be a hit and miss for protecting against random road debris hitting the windshield, but in my case, it does seem to protect the paint.

Good luck with your decision!
