For those you that have had custom hoods painted - was it necessary to blend the adjacent panels in order to get a perfect color match?

I'm looking at adding a RockMonster hood to my 2025 Wrangler and from all the research I have done it seems most shops need to blend the adjacent panels in order to guarantee that the new hood matches the rest of the vehicle.

To make matter worse - I'm dealing with Fathom Blue. It has pearl and lots of flake in the paint. Probably a bear to color match.

I also wanted to buy half doors and have them painted but I'm starting w the hood to see if a color match is even possible.

Thanks!

on my old BMW with a metallic paint, they typically blended in the adjacent areas and the repairs were absolutely undetectable.

i recently had a J**p hood painted and they did not do what i'd call a great job of matching the (white) paint color, and did not blend.

i suspect it has to do with the skill of the shop.

I recently had my Totlinnovations.com JL hero hood painted (silver zynith) and I was nervous. I'm not highly educated in paint matching, but I can tell you what the process went like.

I showed up a couple of days before with my Jeep to the shop so they could "take a look at it" and see if Jeep had a code for the paint (on the inside of the door). Yes, jeep did. But that code can't always be trusted I guess. They proceeded over the next hour or so to spray a sample on what looked like a 12" by 12" piece of metal and hold it up to the current hood color. They then proceeded to "remix" (I guess) and repaint another 12x12 sample and come back out and hold it up to the current hood color. I believe they did this four times over the next hour and a half. I told them I was patient and I didn't care if I was here for 3hrs, if the quality was worth it. I believe I also had a very experienced paint matcher and I was able to see the final sample held up to the Jeep and approve it. I was still nervous, but was very satisfied with the final result. (No blending of fenders, etc.)

This really depends on the color and experience of the shop\painter. Some lighter(ish) colors can be done like the method above or with a scanner (I think that is what they are called) and not be blended. Darker colors and metallics can be challenging because of the shades and the some paints are 3 stage. Too much of one stage can throw off the color or blending. Best bet it to find a reputable shop and get a quote and ask to see some of their work.

It can be done, I grew up watching an old pro family body paint friend doing it. When recently searching for a local to paint my new fenders one shop recommended was painting a 57 Chevy Convertible, C-10 Chevy PU, couple other owner cherished type vehicles. …. Yep, must be a good reputation one, perfect match.

As someone who is looking at this hood and the hood op is looking at be interesting to see how real world results are in keeping the temps down.
Owning the diesel I’m always looking for ways to keep it cooler.

I think the best item to keep the engine temps down is the recommended RPM extreme fan controller from other posts. We just have to deal with the possible warranty issues, but I plan on installing it when my warranty runs out. I'm satisfied with the reduction in temps with the hood and I like the look of the hood. Differentiates it from other Rubi X's out there. If you don't want to shell out the coin for the hood (and painting), I would look into the RPM for $325.

When I had my 2 dr jlr with the 3.6l v6 e torque motor I bought the rpm fan controller for it. Never got it installed before it was bought back by Jeep. Unfortunately Rpm dosent make a controller for the eco diesel.

Ok. Then I think the hood is your next option (unless you want start opting for hood vents. which I did, but the JL Hero totlinnovations hood was so much better).

My temps now peak at 210 engine temp instead of the 220-230+ I was seeing before. "Real world" it helps a great deal if you can use the Zautomotive JL mini to switch on the fan. I would HIGHLY recommend that JLmini in conjunction with the hood. I used that "fan override on" option a lot before my new hood. I use the fan option now about 70% less and then when I do, the design of the new hood helps facilitate greatly the evacuation of the hot air. I can tell my engine cools down faster. These real world conditions have been mostly tracked in the fall and winter. I imagine if it is 105 degrees in the summer, I will have different real world results. But I am positive I will be satisfied.

as a diesel owner i was also looking for a way to keep underhood temps down and was interested in this hood.

i haven't had it out in the Dez heat i'm really curious about yet, but can verify that it has helped Intake Air Temps stay down a little better when moving. (i track several parameters with a Banks iDash gauge.) what i see now is that Intake Air Temps settle in ~17ºF above Ambient temps when cruising, and Average Air Density has been typically higher than before.
once you slow down or stop, however, it's very quickly an oven again under there; i'm somewhat disappointed in this aspect of it. (mind you i never see elevated Coolant, Oil or Trans temps at low speed, but i never did beforehand, either.)

it may be due in part because i caught them while they were between mfg facilities, and it may be because i needed one for the Diesel and they just don't make as many of those, but fit and finish issues on the hoods i received were too many to list here, and parts and drillings were missing/forgotten; it's enough to make me sad to talk about it. the first one they shipped me was a complete failure, and was replaced with another that was better, but far from perfect. thankfully i was working with a crafty install crew, and we made it 'work'.

i didn't do it for looks (thankfully! i was told some were returned because of fit issues and can understand why!), but i'm holding out hope i'll find it was actually worth it for functionality when i get some extended Dez Highway hours in later this year.

the jury is still out.
