Hi,

I have a 2018 JLU with a 6 speed manual- Sport S. I know it has a Hill Assist feature. All winter long, I've been noticing that after being parked, if I try to drive off, I get this kinda click in the parking brakes, then it goes. A few days ago, I played with the Hill Assist feature on an incline. When it's turned on in the UConnect settings, I put the e-brake on, release the e-brake and the jeep holds steady on the hill without the use of the brake pedal or e-brake. That's the way it's supposed to work. However, if I go back in to the UConnect and disable the Hill Assist feature, then retry the exercise again, it seems to still hold the vehicle on the incline-- though not as strongly-- it eventually starts to roll.

Has anyone else experienced of what seems to be the Hill Assist feature not fully disabling when you turn it off in the UConnect settings?

Thank you!

I haven't tried disabling Hilll Assist so I can't answer that part, but from your description I'm not sure your's is working correctly when enabled. Does your's hold for about 2 seconds and then release?

Also, it works when releasing the regular brakes - it doesn't have anything to do with the emergency brake, and the emergency brake has to be off for it to work.

That's the way mine works, and how its described in the manual. Sorry if I misunderstood your description and you know all this.

That's interesting-- I haven't tried using regular brakes on the hill.

The problem I'm trying to identify is, I want to disable the Hill Assist. So I'd expect with it off, that the vehicle would just roll on a hill-- and it seems the assist still holds it in place-- even when disabled, though maybe not hold it as strongly as if it was enabled.

I'd suggest taking the Emergency brake out of the equation for this. That way you can figure out if you have a problem with it or not.

I just tried mine with Hill-Start Assist enabled and with it disabled and it behaves just as the manual describes.

On incline;
In 1st Gear;
Brakes applied;
Clutch in;
Emergency Brake off.

With Hill-Start Assist enabled, when I release the brakes it will hold for 2-3 seconds, then roll backwards.

With Hill-Start Assist disabled, when I release the brakes it rolls backwards right away.

Hope this helps in figuring out what's going on with yours.

My Rubicon ā€œjust rollsā€ if the HA feature is disabled. If enabled, it holds the brakes just briefly while I move my foot from brake pedal to throttle; it will not hold more than a second or two. With HA enabled there is no use case for using the ebrake, and so itā€™s either: 1) use HA, or 2) go old school and use ebrake on steep incline starts when thereā€™s an ahole on your bumper.

Hi juels98,
Have you had a chance to bring this Hill Assist question to the attention of your dealership? They would be in the best position to provide additional insight. Let us know in a private message if you need any help locating a dealership in your area or if you have any additional questions.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I have not seen a dealer yet-- just wanted to make sure I have a valid concern. It does seem that even though I have the Hill Assist disabled-- I can feel/hear the click from the brakes releasing. I can also take my foot off the break and the jeep still holds.

Thanks for your help.

The purpose of the hill-assist is so the driver doesn't have to use the hand-brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward as the foot is moved from the foot-brake to the clutch. It does this by applying the brakes for a couple of seconds so one can move the foot from the brake to the clutch without doing anything else.
The operation of hill assist is not linked to the use of the hand-brake.
I find that if I have my foot gently pressed on the foot-brake while stopped on a hill, the hill assist doesn't kick in, but if I have pressed my foot firmly on the foot-brake, it works every time.
I hope that this helps...
